Scatterlings Of Africa (1982)
Copper sun sinking low
Scatterlings and fugitives
Hooded eyes and weary brows
Seek refuge in the night
Chorus
They are the scatterlings of Africa
Each uprooted one
On the road to Phelamanga
Beneath the copper sun
And I love the scatterlings of Africa
Each and every one
In their hearts a burning hunger
Beneath the copper sun
Broken wall, bicycle wheel
African sun forging steel, singing
Magic machine cannot match
Human being human being
African idea -- make the future clear
Chorus
They are the scatterlings of Africa
Each uprooted one
On the road to Phelamanga
Beneath the copper sun
And for the scatterlings of Africa
The journey has begun
Future find their hungry eyes
Beneath the copper sun
Ancient bones from Olduvai
Echoes of the very first cry
"Who made me, here and why? --
Beneath this copper sun."
My very first beginnings
Beneath the copper sky
Lie deeply buried
In the dust of Olduvai
Chorus
And we are scatterlings of Africa
Both you and I
We are on the road to Phelamanga
Beneath a copper sky
And we are scatterlings of Africa
On a journey to the stars
Far below we leave forever
Dreams of what we were
Hawu beke Mama-ye! Mama-ye!
In the beginning
Beneath the copper sky
Ancient bones
In the dust of Olduvai
Who made us, here, and why
Remember!
Scatterlings of Africa (repeat and fade)
This is part of the story of
who the Scatterlings Of Africa are - "And
we are Scatterlings Of Africa, both you and I..." *smile*
But I think that the first two verses of the song allude to the
decendants of those members of humanity who stayed behind during that
long ago human migration, and were for whatever reasons, scattered
throughout the African Continent.
Be it due to natural events or -as is often the case with J.C.'s music
-due to unnatural causes such as policies brought about through
Colonialism.
So "Scatterlings Of Africa" is essentially a poignantly poetic reference
to the entire human family, wherever we may be or regardless of whatever
our outward appearing variances might be.
Makes it nearly impossible to get ones mind about such concepts and NOT
come to a deeper understanding of the African concept of UBUNTU...
I am what I am because we (all of us together) are what we are.

Bullets for Bafazane (1983)
Shadow men from the outlands come to town
Looking for Bafazane they want to gun him down
Oh no
They say he thunders too loud and his people are proud
And they’ll never give in while he's still around
And it's the sky up above that he loves
Chorus:
Eyes wide open in the backroom, finger on the trigger
Listening for any sound that will betray the silent deadly figure
He's got iron in his soul, he's got a smile in his eyes
He makes dancing shoes from old car tyres
And it's the sky up above that he loves
Chorus:
It's the sky up above that he loves
‘Cause he's still alive and for him that's enough
Chorus:
They’ve got bullets for Bafazane - They want to gun him down
They've got bullets for Bafazane - Now they're searching the town
They've got bullets for Bafazane - And the word's got around
They’ve got bullets for Bafazane
Scatterlings von Afrika (1982)
Kupferne Sonne sinkt herab
Scatterlings und Flüchtlinge
Mit versteckte Augen und müde Brauen
Strebe in der Nacht Zuflucht
Refrain
Sie sind die scatterlings von Afrika
Jedes entwurzelte einen
Auf der Straße zu Phelamanga
Unter der kupfernen Sonne
Und ich liebe den scatterlings von Afrika
Jedes und jeder eine
In ihren Herzen ein brennender Hunger
Unter der kupfernen Sonne
Gebrochene Mauer, Fahrradrad,
Afrikanischer Sonnenschmiedestückstahl, beim Singen,
Magische Maschine kann nicht zusammenpassen
Menschenmensch
Afrikanische Idee macht die Zukunft klar
Refrain
Sie sind die scatterlings von Afrika
Jedes entwurzelte einen
Auf der Straße zu Phelamanga
Unter der kupfernen Sonne
Und für den scatterlings von Afrika
Die Reise hat angefangen
Künftig finde ihre hungrigen Augen
Unter der kupfernen Sonne
Alte Knochen von Olduvai
Echos des absolut ersten Schreies
"Wer machte mich, hier und warum? --
Unter dieser kupfernen Sonne."
Meine absolut ersten Anfänge
Unter dem kupfernen Himmel
Lüge begrub tief
Im Staub von Olduvai
Refrain
Und wir sind scatterlings von Afrika
Sowohl du als auch ich
Wir sind auf der Straße zu Phelamanga
Unter einem kupfernen Himmel
Und wir sind scatterlings von Afrika
Auf einer Reise zu den Sternen
Weit unter uns gehe ewig
Träume von dem, was wir waren,
Hawu beke Muttiye! Muttiye!
Am Anfang
Unter dem kupfernen Himmel
Alte Knochen
Im Staub von Olduvai
Wer machte uns hier und warum
Erinnre dich!
