thats the translation for the song. Hope thats what you wanted
It means (literally) Come Friday! It's pretty musch the South African
version of TGIF...I think Johnny wasn't the first to say it either...my
youth betrays me here, wasn't there another, earlier song by someone else
that brought the term to the front? For some reason Mahlatini and the
Mahotela Queens or Miriam Makeba spring to mind, but I could just be making
stuff up now.

I'm confident about the translation if that's any comfort :).
There is actually a lot more to it.
The song is a social comment of the time.
Blacks, at the time being the underclass, were appallingly paid, denied
education and living in isolation from their families (often days' travel
away and prohibitively expensive to achieve and anyway, they usually worked
long hours and weeks and simply didn't have the time to go and visit their
wives and children - which they might have done maybe once a year).
Typically, the men lived in large hostels, sharing rooms with several others
and often sharing beds on a rotational basis. All they had to look forward
to at the end of the week was their tiny paypacket and the thougt of
drowning it all in some cheap shebeen beer on a Friday night. Hence "Arise
Friday" or "come on Friday!"
Most of JC's songs of the era harboured an apartheid message and this joyous
celbration of the weekend is no exception.
rot = noch auf der Suche ;-)
A number of you probably
know this but while surfing, I came across an album from 2001 from the AIDS
concerts:
CALL THE POLICE!
KIRKELIG KULTURVERKSTED (2001)
Catalog no.: FXCD248
- you can buy the whole album, or if you want, can download just the JC tracks -
Giyani (length 6:06) and I Call Your Name (length 4:58). The cost
for the individual tracks is Norway Kroner 9,50 each (which comes to US $1.37
per track as of today's exchange)
