A Country Imagined - Art and Landscape in South Africa
I've been writing for a TV documentary series on art and landscape in South Africa titled "A Country Imagined." It's a BBC-style epic series of one hour episodes with amazing aerial footage as well as interactions with amazing South African artists. A-List South African musician, Johnny Clegg, is the narrator and 'everyman' who criss-crosses the country engaging with the landscape and representations of it.

Johnny Clegg, who celebrates his 30th year in the music industry this year combines a unique ability to learn; teach; and perform simultaneously. In the series he performs with musicians and dancers in remote villages around the country; talks to artists; both famous and unknown; hikes the Drakensberg to find the best rock art and views; travels in hot air balloons; helicopters and boats. To this he brings his insight; expertise; and a great deal of humour, offering viewers a rich and accessible perspective on South African art.

It has involved traversing 80 000 kilometres, often over difficult terrain, scouring regional art galleries and private collections for artwork of lesser-known artists and literally hundreds of hours of research. It is produced by Lusanda Chauke and art historian, Tracy Murinik and directed by some of South Africa’s most acclaimed directors, including Guy Spiller; John Trengove; Vincent Moloi; Feizel Mamdoo; Liza Key; and Terri Ella.
Shot on HD, with remarkable aerial, historical and time-lapse photography, A Country Imagined is a 13 one-hour series, set to be aired on Sundays at 21:00, starting 25 April.

"Der weiße Zulu" ist eine ebenso weltweit bekannte Persönlichkeit wie Nelson Mandela, für den er seinen legendären Hit "Asimbonanga" komponierte. 2008, zu seinem 90. Geburtstag, stieg der Präsident der Gewaltlosigkeit bei einer Tournee zur Aids-Bekämpfung sogar zu den Klängen von "Asimbonanga" auf die Bühne.
Der Musiker, Komponist, Tänzer und Anthropologe Johnny Clegg ist der Sänger des Anti-Apartheid-Kampfes. Er trug dazu bei, die südafrikanische Musik und das Engagement für die Bürgerrechte der Schwarzen in der ganzen Welt bekannt zu machen.
Cleggs die vielgestaltigen Kulturen seines Landes verbindende Musik unterlag der Zensur des Apartheidsregimes. Dennoch überquerte sie die Grenzen, erregte internationales Aufsehen und machte den Künstler zur Ikone der 1990er-Jahre. In den vergangenen dreißig Jahren verkaufte er mehr als 50 Millionen Alben.

OME 30 years ago, Juluka released its first album, the groundbreaking Universal Men. And now Johnny Clegg, one half of that legendary songwriting and performance partnership, is celebrating the anniversary with a concert.
Spirit is the Journey - the 30th Anniversary Concert will be on for two nights only - on 26 and 27 June, on the Nelson Mandela Stage at the Joburg Theatre Complex, in Braamfontein. It will tell the musical tale of Clegg's career. He will use anecdotes, historical bits and pieces, and anthropological facts - all culminating in a fascinating life story. Starting off in 1976, his career has taken him all over the world. His first band, Juluka, was formed with Sipho Mchunu. Together they wrote songs using a mix of English and Zulu lyrics; Clegg says he was a very "active person" in 1976, when he wrote songs alone as well as with Mchunu. Between 1976 and 1983, many things started to move culturally in the country and Juluka used a mix of languages which was not acceptable to the National Party at the time. However, the band had a growing fan base, enlivened by their popular, energetic live performances. Savuka
After Juluka spilt in 1985, Clegg formed another band, Savuka. He says it differed from Juluka in that their music was more politically inclined through the song writing and content. "Savuka was [broader] in its crossover," he says. "Instead of relying on Zulu music we [the band] incorporated other African styles: a Zimbabwean guitar, we looked at Zairian music - we were more pan-African and because of the Indian influence in our country I looked at other communities in South Africa. We even incorporated Hindu moments in our songs. "Instead of just being Zulu-based folk rock, we moved to a more modern sound."
Savuka grew out of the state of emergency in South Africa in 1986. Between then and 1994, the band released four albums, driven mainly by what was going on in the country around that time. They split in 1994.
South African Story
Around 2002, he re-launched his career with A South African Story, which illustrated on stage his life through audiovisual clips, interviews and music.
"The first half went from when I met Sipho and Charlie Mzila, from 1967 to 1990, and the second half was from 1990 to the current time, which was 2000 ... It was more of a kind of a political-cultural musical life story ... People felt so inspired about being South African, having a story told to them."
Clegg is a man of many talents: he's a musician, singer, songwriter and dancer; an anthropologist, academic and activist. He campaigned against the injustice of apartheid and was instrumental in the new South Africa as a cultural ambassador.
He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the Witwatersrand for his contributions to the music industry. He is also presenting a 13-hour television series, currently broadcast on SABC2, called A Country Imagined. It is a journey exploring South Africa and its landscapes that for centuries have inspired artists of all varieties.

Hier soir, il était à l'affiche des Estivales du Château, Johnny Clegg.
la foule était tellement nombreuse pour cet événement qu'il a été décidé, pour des raisons de sécurité, de fermer l'accès au site en invitant le public à aller sur la Place du Château pour suivre le concert sur un écran géant.
Voici donc un aperçu de ce spectacle qui est sous l'égide du Conseil Général de la Savoie.

Johnny Clegg wird am 12.September diesen Jahres im Frankfurter Hof in Mainz ein Konzert geben.
Clegg, der auch den Beinamen “The white Zulu” (der weisse Zulu) trägt, ist einigen von Ihnen vielleicht bekannt.
Ich hatte das grosse Vergnügen ihn erst kürzlich live in London zu erleben. Und ich kann nur sagen: Wow – was für ein unvergesslicher Abend!
Johnny Clegg wird nur einen Auftritt in Deutschland geben und ich kann Ihnen nur empfehlen, sich diese Vorstellung nicht entgehen zu lassen. Seine Musik wird oft als “Zulu-Pop” bezeichnet und ist eine Mischung aus Englisch und Zulu. Die Konzerte sind unterlegt mit Clegg’s Stammes-Tänzen und sind wirklich ein tolles Erlebnis!

Spirit is the Journey - The 30th Anniversary Concert
Bekannt wurde Johnny Clegg durch seine Arbeit mit der Popmusik-Gruppe Juluka. Mit 15 Jahren lernte Clegg in Soweto den Zulu Mntonanazo Mzila kennen, der ihn mit ritueller Musik und Tänzen vertraut machte. 1969 traf er in Johannesburg auf Sipho Mchunu und trat mit ihm als Johnny & Sipho auf, was wegen der Apartheidsgesetze nur im privaten Rahmen oder in Kirchen und kleinen Clubs möglich war. 1976 veröffentlichten sie die ersten Singles, die in der Zulumusik und im westlichen Folk wurzelten. Während die Zensurbehörde die Liedtexte des Duos bannte, wurden sie zu populären Gestalten der Avantgarde, die in dem englischen Dokumentarfilm Rhythm of Resistance von 1978 gewürdigt wurden. 1981 spielten Clegg und Mchunu sowie die Vokalgruppe Ladysmith Black Mambazo für den Westdeutschen Rundfunk in Köln traditionelle afrikanische Musik ein.
Hilton Rosenthal, der künstlerische Direktor von CBS South Africa, bot Johnny & Sipho an, eine LP aufzunehmen. Hierfür holten sie noch vier weitere Musiker und Musikerinnen dazu. So entstand die erste gemischtrassige Popgruppe Südafrikas, die sich Juluka (Zulu für Schweiß) nannte und 1979 ihr erstes Album, Universal Men herausbrachte. Die Musik des Sextetts fusionierte Rock mit Zulumusik. Julukas zweites Album, African Litany, erhielt zwei Goldene Schallplatten in Südafrika. 1983 fand Juluka mit dem Album Scatterlings international Beachtung. Der Titelsong handelt davon, dass jeder ein scatterling ist, ein Flüchtling und Heimatloser, weil die Menschheit aus Afrika stammt und sich in alle Winde zerstreut hat. Scatterlings of Africa ist auf dem Soundtrack von Rain Man vertreten. Als Sipho Mchunu 1984 seine Karriere als Profimusiker aufgab, löste sich Juluka auf.
Clegg formierte 1985 seine zweite multiethnische Band Savuka (dt. „Wir sind erwacht“), die er als Begleitband für seine Auftritte verstand. Als Kopf von Savuka strebte Clegg eine Mischung von Rock und Mbaqanga (Township Jive) an. 1987 erschien das Album Third World Child. Es kam in Frankreich auf Platz 1 der LP-Hitparade und der französische Rockstar Renaud schrieb für Johnny Clegg & Savuka den Song Jonathan. Auch das Folgealbum Shadow Man von 1988 kam in die Spitze der Charts.
Aufgrund des allgemeinen Boykotts gegen Südafrikas Apartheidregime konnte Clegg am 11. Juni 1988 nicht an der Nelson-Mandela-Benefizgala in London teilnehmen.
Nach der südafrikanischen Wende von 1990 wurde Clegg zum Mitbegründer der South African Musicians Alliance und engagierte sich auch in anderen Anti-Apartheid-Gruppen.
1990 war Clegg mit Savukas drittem Album Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World und einer Liveshow auch in Deutschland erfolgreich. 1992 erschien in der Reihe World Network eine Doppel-CD mit Clegg-Aufnahmen. Ende 1992 und Anfang 1993 produzierte Clegg mit Unterstützung von Savuka und verschiedenen Studiogästen das Album Heat, Dust & Dreams, das sich mit der Ermordung seines Freundes Dudu Zulu und der Politik Südafrikas beschäftigt, in dem sich Afro-Pop mit indischen Ragas mischt. 1994 löste sich Savuka nach einer Deutschlandtournee auf. Clegg spielte mit Sipho Mchunu das Album Crocodile Love ein, das 1997 veröffentlicht wurde. Es beinhaltet das Stück Love is Just a Dream, das auch als Single erschien.
2002 kam Cleggs erstes Soloalbum New World Survivor heraus, 2003 die Live-CD A South African Story, seine gleichnamige Bühnenshow sowie eine DVD-Kompilation von Johnny Clegg/Savuka/Juluka-Videos und Liveauftritten. Gemeinsam mit Weltstars trat er beim Aids-Konzert 46664 2003 auf (Wiederholungskonzerte 2005 und 2007).
Sein neues Album "New World Survivor" ist vorerst nur in seiner Heimat Südafrika erschienen ( wo es allerdings auch schon Goldstatus erlangt hat ). Live überzeugt der Gitarrist und Sänger, der seine Karriere zu Zeiten der Apartheid als Strassenmusikant begann und durch sein gemeinsames Auftreten mit Zulumusikern mehr als einmal mit einem Fuß im Gefängnis stand, nach wie vor mit einer mitreissenden Bühnenshow - Inhlangwini Tänze inklusive.

Akkordeonfestival Les Nuits de Nacre in Tulle
Vom 16. – 19. September 2010 steht die französische Stadt Tulle ganz im Zeichen des Akkordeons. Dann findet dort das längst Tradition gewordene Musikfestival „Les Nuits de Nacre“ statt. Musette verbindet sich mit Jazz und vielen anderen musikalischen Stilrichtungen der Welt. Entsprechend breit ist die Palette der teilnehmenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler: Richard Galliano, Domi Emorine, Johnny Clegg, Juliette Gréco, Caroline Loeb, Bogdan Nesterenko, Les Dénicheurs, Chloé Lacan …
Tulle, Hauptstadt des Départements Corrèze, ist übrigens die Stadt, in der der französische Akkordeonfabrikant Maugein ansässig ist. Nicht zuletzt deswegen hat das Akkordeon dort traditionell eine zentrale Bedeutung. Beim Festival „Les Nuits de Nacre“ kommt das in zahlreichen Konzerten zum Ausdruck, die von Ausstellungen und vielfältigen weiteren Aktiviäten rund um das Instrument flankiert werden.

Johnny Clegg is celebrating his 30th anniversary in the music industry with a once-off concert at Emmarentia Dam on 6 November 2010.
It is proudly brought to you by 94.7 Highveld Stereo. The original Juluka band will be reunited for this show only, performing the hit songs of Juluka, Savuka and Johnny Clegg spanning his 30-year career.
During the three decades he’s been making anthemic hits, Johnny has proved himself to be an outstanding musical ambassador for his country.
By combining African music structures with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds, Johnny pioneered a new and unique sound, establishing himself as South Africa’s biggest musical export. 10.12.2010 The Venue, Melrose Arch UNPLUGGED BENEFIT (benefit for Trevor Donjeany), Johannesburg SA
We were lucky enough to attend the Clegg unplugged benefit show last night in Johannesburg. The show raised money to help with the upcoming medical expenses of Johnny's bassist Trevor Donjeany, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The Venue, a great space at Melrose Arch, was sold out in a matter of days.
I've been to dozens of Clegg shows but this one was by far one of his best, if not the best I've seen.The band, calling themselves the Brat + J consisted of Bongani, a great drummer sitting in for Barry (his names slips my mind but begins with "r"), Andy, and Trevor. Their acoustic sound was fantastic, Johnny was in great voice and the vocal harmonies were spot-on. Johnny worked the crowd, walking from table to table chatting and taking photos with everyone.
The music and dinner were followed by an auction that included two beautifully framed pieces of Clegg memorabilia, a guitar signed by the members of U2 and another signed by AC/DC, and an Elvis piece. One of the Clegg pieces included the original handwritten in pencil, lyrics to Asimbonanga, his gold record, autograph, etc. The other beautifully framed piece included a Clegg t-shirt, 30 year anniversary DVD, autograph, etc. I was the lucky winner of the t-shirt/DVD piece. What an incredible night it was!...
