Johnny Clegg is looking for musicians to join his band

Auditions will be held late February for live performers for Johnny Clegg’s band. He is looking for: 

(a)    Electric bass and backing vocals; and

(b)   Keyboards / saxophone & proficiency on one wind instrument as well as backing vocals

 

Requirement: At least three years professional performing experience with live bands. B Mus or equivalent qualification and a working knowledge of spoken Zulu or ability to sing in the Zulu language will give candidates significant advantage. Candidates must have their own instruments.

 

Successful applicants will be required to tour in SA, Europe and America during 2006 with the possibility of ongoing work.

Short-listed candidates will be required to provide at least one recording of their performance capability prior to audition. It's a birthday bash that the likes of Elton John or P Diddy - famous for the elaborate parties they host - would envy. And what's more, 8 000 tickets are available (through Computicket) free on a first-come-first-serve basis.
From midday on Sunday March 19, SABC2 will be celebrating its 10th birthday at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia.
The 11-hour party will include a who's who line-up of musicians and SABC2 personalities, as well as activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Whatever your musical taste, a concert, starting at 8pm, will feature a truly eclectic group of artists including Arno Carstens, Mafikizolo, Patricia Lewis, Bongo Maffin, Dozi, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Danny K, Karen Zoid, Johnny Clegg, Freshlyground and Ntando.
Being the channel for the South African family, those attending can meet their favourite celebrities.
A celebrity marquee will host some of SABC2's stars from 7de Laan, Muvhango, Noot vir Noot, Morning Live, 50/50, World of Winners and Die Nutsman, as well as Joe Mafela, Ashifashabba, Twakkie, Michelle Garforth and Freek Robinson.

The concerts in Germany that were announced for early April had been
postponed to late April about 3 months ago but now it looks like they will
not take place before the second half of June even tough there were tickets
on sale for the April gigs for a couple of weeks now. The site

concert in Hamburg was cancelled and there is a new date for Frankfurt
22/06/2006 but if the gig announced for the 25/04/2006 was cancelled the
site doesn't mention. I'd say this is very likely as it is for the one in
Berlin (27/04/2006). - So as it seems we will not see Johnny back in Europe
before mid June when hopefully the European Tour will start. At the moment

Film Afrika is co-producing the film, which is being directed by award-winning Dane Bille August and is due to be released in 2007. Screen stars Diane Kruger and Joseph Fiennes have been billed, alongside South Africa's Tsotsi star Terry Pheto. The film is based on the memoir Gregory wrote of how Mandela altered his initially racist perceptions during the 20 years that he guarded him at Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. Der "weiße Zulu":
Johnny Clegg
Wenn Johnny Clegg heute in Mainz auftritt, meldet sich ein Großer der Rockmusik Südafrikas zurück. Diesen Mann mutig zu nennen, wäre untertrieben: Im Alter von 15 Jahren läßt er sich als Weißer im Schwarzen-Ghetto Soweto mit Tänzen und der Musik des Volks der Zulu vertraut machen - unerhört im Südafrika der Apartheid-Zeit. Er gründet mit „Juluka“ die erste gemischtrassische Band des Landes, die Rock und Musik der Zulu kombiniert. Macht Weltmusik, bevor dieser Begriff die Runde macht. Doch dabei beläßt es Clegg nicht.
Vielmehr ruft er mit „Savuka“ seine zweite Gruppe ins Leben, in der Schwarze mit ihm spielen. „Savuka“ bedeutet „Wir sind erwacht“ - eine klare Ansage an die Regierung. Mit dem „Third world child“ hat die Gruppe auch international Erfolg. Drei Jahre darauf, 1990, tourt Clegg durch Deutschland und wird gefeiert, vier weitere Jahre später ist die Apartheid Geschichte - und um den „weißen Zulu“ wird es zunehmend ruhig. Weil sich das große Thema erledigt hat, an dem er sich abarbeiten konnte?
Arbeitslose und Aids-Kranke
Johnny Clegg verneint. An Themen mangelt es ihm nicht, wie der Musiker aus Johannesburg versichert. Nach dem Ende der Apartheid geht es aus seiner Sicht in Südafrika nun darum, die Demokratie zu sichern und zu pflegen. Denn das jahrzehntelang isolierte Land ist keineswegs auf der sicheren Seite. „Wir haben schon das Problem, daß unser Geheimdienst als politische Waffe eingesetzt worden ist, um Kandidaten für die Präsidentenwahlen zu isolieren“, erläutert er.
Hinzu kommen die Herausforderung, die sich aus der Arbeitslosenquote von gut 35 Prozent ergibt, und die große Zahl von HIV-Infizierten und Aids-Kranken. Nicht zuletzt ist ihm die auf Millionen Gastarbeiter zielende Fremdenfeindlichkeit in der „Regenbogennation“ ein Dorn im Auge. „Es gibt also genügend und für unser Land recht neue Themen, zu denen ich mich äußern kann.“
Auf seinem neuen Album singt er über das Nachbarland Zimbabwe, in dem vielen Weißen das Leben schwergemacht wird, und über Kindersoldaten in Afrika. Auch Alltagsthemen, die Minenarbeiter beschäftigen, eine der größten Berufsgruppen des Landes, die von massenhaften Entlassungen gebeutelt ist. Und ein paar Liebeslieder sind auch auf der Platte zu hören.
Zurück zu den musikalischen Wurzeln
Das neue Album wird ihm wieder mehr Gelegenheit geben, in Deutschland beachtet zu werden, wie er hofft. „One life“ heißt die Scheibe, die im Oktober auf den Markt kommen wird. Clegg verspricht eine Rückkehr zu seinen musikalischen Wurzeln. So hat er verstärkt zu akustischen Gitarren statt elektrischen Instrumenten gegriffen und auch mehrstimmigen Gesang eingespielt, der sich an die Gesänge bei den traditionellen Kriegstänzen der Zulu anlehnt. Auch lateinamerikanische Rhythmen werden zu hören sein, was für ihn eher untypisch ist.
Dabei singt Clegg in vier Sprachen: Englisch, Afrikaans und Zulu sowie Französisch, was nicht nur als Gruß an die große Fangemeinde in Frankreich verstanden werden kann. „Ich mache Weltmusik für den Weltmusik-Markt“, sagt der 1953 in England geborene Künstler.
Einen Eindruck, wie „One Life“ klingt, will Johnny Clegg beim Auftritt in Mainz vermitteln, das bis auf weiteres sein einziges Konzert in Deutschland ist. Dazu wird er alte Hits spielen. Ob auch „One man, one vote“, einer seiner größten Erfolge, darunter sein wird, läßt er offen.

Lange war es still um den Mann, der in den 90er Jahren mit seiner Band Savuka in ganz Europa Triumphe feierte. Sein neues Album "NewWorld Survivor" ist vorerst nur in seiner Heimat Südafrika erschienen.Live überzeugt der Gitarrist und Sänger, der seine Karriere zu Zeiten der Apartheit als Strassenmusikant begann und durch sein gemeinsames Auftreten mit Zulumusikern mehr als einmal mit einem Fuss im Gefängnisstand, nach wie vor mit einer mitreißenden Bühnenshow.

Mit 15 lernte Johnny Clegg in Soweto den Zulu Mntonanazo Mzila kennen, der ihn mit ritueller Musik und Tänzen vertraut machte. Anfang der 1970er Jahre traf er auf Siphu Mchunu und trat mit ihm als „Johnny & Siphu“ auf, was wegen der Apartheidsgesetze nur im privaten Rahmen oder in kleinen Clubs möglich war.

Zulumusik und westlicher Folk
1976 veröffentlichten sie die ersten Singles, die in der Zulumusik und im westlichen Folk wurzelten. Während die Zensurbehörde die Liedtexte des Duos bannte, wurden sie zu populären Gestalten der Avantgarde, die in dem englischen Dokumentarfilm „Rhythm of Resistance“ von 1978 gewürdigt wurden.

Juluku - Rock und Zulu
Hilton Rosenthal, der künstlerische Direktor von CBS South Africa bot „Johnny & Siphu“ an, eine LP aufzunehmen, doch sie holten vier weitere Musiker und Musikerinnen dazu. So entstand die erste gemischtrassige Popgruppe Südafrikas, die sich Juluka nannte und 1980 ihr erstes Album, „Universal Men“ herausbrachte. Die Musik des Sextetts fusionierte Rock mit Zulumusik. Julukas zweites Album, „African Litany“ erhielt zwei Goldene Schallplatten in Südafrika.

Scatterings
1983 fand Juluka mit dem Album „Scatterlings“ international Beachtung. Der Titelsong handelt davon, dass jeder ein „scatterling“ ist, ein Flüchtling und Heimatloser, weil die Menschheit aus Afrika stammt und sich in alle Winde zerstreut hat. Als Sipho Mchunu 1984 sein Leben als Profimusiker aufgab, löste sich Juluka auf.

Mit Savuka gegen Apartheid und in die Charts
Clegg formierte 1985 seine zweite gemischtrassige Band, die sich Savuka nannte („Wir sind erwacht“), und die er als Begleitband für seine Auftritte verstand. Als Kopf von Savuka strebte Johnny Clegg eine Mischung von Rock und Mbaqanga (Township Jive) an. 1987 erschien das Album „Third World Child“. Es kam in Frankreich auf Platz 1 der LP-Hitparade und der französische Rockstar Renaud schrieb für Johnny Clegg & Savuka den Song „Jonathan“. Auch das Folgealbum „Shadow Man“ von 1988 kam in die Spitze der Charts.

Aufgrund des allgemeinen Boykotts gegen Südafrikas Apartheids-Regime konnte Clegg nicht am 11. Juni 1988 an der Mandela-Benefizgala in London teilnehmen.

1990 fand Clegg mit Savukas Album Nummer 3 „Cruel, Crazy, beautiful World“ und einer Liveshow auch in Deutschland begeisterte Zustimmung. 1992 erschien in der Reihe „World Network“ eine Doppel-CD mit Clegg-Aufnahmen. Ende 1992/Anfang 1993 produzierte Clegg mit Unterstützung von Savuka und verschiedenen Studiogästen das Album „Heat, Dust & Dreams“, das sich mit der Ermordung seines Freundes Dudu Zulu und der Politik Südafrikas beschäftigt, in dem sich Afro-Pop mit indischen Ragas mischt. 1994 löste sich Savuka nach einer Deutschlandtournee auf. Clegg spielte mit Siphu Mchunu das Album „Crocodile love“ ein, das 1997 veröffentlicht wurde.

Wenn man über ihn schreibt, darf man auch Sipho Mchunu nicht auslassen, mit dem er 1970 in Johannesburg ein Duo, später dann o.g. Juluka gründete. Johnny Clegg ist am 1953 in Rochedale, England, zur Welt gekommen und wuchs in Simbabwe, Sambia und Südafrika auf. Er studiertdie Tänze und die Musik der Zulu, worüber der studierte Sozial-Anthropologe auch mehrere Arbeiten veröffentlicht. Er ist auch Dozent für Musikethnologie. Mchunu stammt aus Greytown, KwaZulu Natal,wo er schon in jungen Jahren ein bekannter Gitarrist ist.

Auf Jobsuche in Johannesburg, lernt er Johnny Clegg kennen, der eine ungewöhnliche Offenheit im rassistischen Südafrika an den Tag legt. Sie sind die erste schwarz-weiße Band, auch musikalisch. Das erste Album mit dem programmatischen Titel "Universal Man" erscheint 1979 und ist ein vielbeachtetes Debut. Im Radio wird es nicht gespielt.

Fünf Goldene und Zwei Mal Platin
Sechs Jahre später haben sie fünf goldene und zwei Platinalben im Schrank. Dann lösen sie Juluka auf, Clegg gründet seine eigene Formation, Savuka, und er schreibt viele Filmmusiken, unter anderem für Rain Man. Sipho kümmert sich wieder verstärkt um seine Farm und stellt ebenfalls eine eigene Band zusammen, Amabhubesi. Auch er doziert, nämlich über Zulu-Gitarrenstile. 1996 kommen die beiden wieder zusammenund werkeln eineinhalb Jahre an ihrem Re-Unite-Album Crocodile

Der letzte Akkord von „Dela“ ist gespielt, der letzte Antwortchor aus dem Publikum verklungen. Johnny Clegg winkt nach noch einmal verschwitzt und lächelnd in die euphorische Menge - ein letztes Mal für diesen Donnerstagabend, wie er meint. Schließlich hat er schon einen guten Tick länger gespielt als die geplanten anderthalb Stunden. Wenige Sekunden später schaltet jemand die Deckenleuchter an, kurz darauf erklingt Musik aus der Konserve. Gemeinhin das sichere Zeichen: Das Konzert ist zuende. Doch die meisten der annähernd 1000 Fans, darunter Mittzwanziger wie Silberköpfchen, kümmern sich nicht um die von dem südafrikanischen Musiker gewählte Dramaturgie.
Ihn gehen lassen, nach 110 Minuten, bei seinem einzigen Konzert in Deutschland? Kommt nicht in Frage! So klatschen sie sich rhythmisch die Hände heiß und rufen „Zugabe“. Unablässig. Minutenlang. Da wird die Musik vom Band lauter, doch die übertönen sie. Und dann schwillt ihr Jubel weiter an. Der Gitarrist, der Keyboarder, der Bassist und die Sängerin kommen zurück auf die Bühne, schließlich auch Clegg selbst.

„Where's the drummer?“
Das Schlagzeug aber bleibt leer. „Where's the drummer?“, fragt Clegg halblaut mehr sich selbst als seine Band und schaut dann hinter der Bühne nach. Als er eine halbe Minute später zurückkommt, den Schlagzeuger im Schlepptau verkündet er mit einem Lachen: „The drummer was already in the shower!“ Der streift sich das Wasser von dem Armen, greift zu seinen Stöcken - und los geht's mit den unplanmäßigen Zugaben. „Asimbonanga“ erklingt, ein traurig-emotionales Lied über den ehedem inhaftierten Nelson Mandela, das Idol vieler Südafrikaner, und über andere wie Steve Biko, die die Apartheid in dem Land bekämpft und dies zum Teil mit dem Leben bezahlt haben.
Die Verlängerung spricht für Clegg und seine Lust am Konzertieren. Aber im Grunde kann es gar nicht anders sein. Nach längerer Zeit mal wieder in Deutschland, hat er vor Spielfreude gesprüht, ein halbes Dutzend neuer Stücke präsentiert und ältere wie „Third world child“ und „Cruel, crazy, beautiful world“, er hat geistreich launige und traurige Geschichten zwischen den Liedern erzählt, von seiner Jugend berichtet und dem Umzug von Johannesburg in eine Frauenkommune nach Durban am Indischen Ozean, wo er mit drei „marxistic, feministic antipenetrationists“ zusammengelebt hat. Nicht zuletzt hat er energiegeladen wie leichtfüßig tanzend gezeigt, warum er der „weiße Zulu“ genannt wird.
Neues Album kommt im Oktober
Wer Johnny Cleggs Musik mag und nicht in Mainz, darf sich ruhig ärgern. Aber Trost zieht herauf: Im Oktober kommt sein neues Album „One life“ in Deutschland heraus. Und anschließend soll er wieder auf Tour kommen. Nichts wie hin!

Afro-Pop-Gitarrist und -Sänger Johnny Clegg, der in den 90er Jahren mit seiner Band "Savuka" in ganz Europa Triumphe feierte, gastierte im Frankfurter Hof.
Schon auf der Treppe kommt einem dieser Duft entgegen. Das ist zwar nicht ganz ungewöhnlich, befindet sich doch unter dem Konzertsaal des Frankfurter Hofs auch eine gastronomische Einrichtung. Aber diesmal ist dieser Geruch eigentümlicher, exotisch geradezu. Und tatsächlich, zum Konzert gibt´s ein Buffet - vom Kouskous über Curry-Huhn bis hin zu originellen Fisch-Spezialitäten. Johnny Clegg ist daran schuld. Zumindest indirekt. Sein Auftreten hat vor 30 Jahren zwar nicht die Welt verändert, aber für viele den Blick auf die Ungerechtigkeiten des südafrikanischen Apartheid-Systems gerichtet. Heute gelten seine Konzerte als gut gelaunte Partys mit nicht zu überhörendem Polit-Faktor. Und ganz offensichtlich auch mit kulinarischem Aspekt.
Der Mann mit den exaltierten Bewegungen ruht sich nicht auf Lorbeeren vergangener Zeiten aus, sondern verausgabt sich vor zahlreich erschienenem Auditorium nach Leibeskräften. Mit dieser seltsam schmeichelnd-schneidenden Stimme, dem prägnanten Spiel der Gitarre und einer solide ausgestatteten Band gelingt es ihm mühelos, Fans und neutrale Beobachter gleichermaßen in seinen Bann zu ziehen. Vielleicht gar nicht mal so sehr wegen seiner musikalischen Ideen, die sich vor allem durch eine geschickte Verbindung von Reggae-Anleihen, Rock-Standards, volkstümlichen Klängen und eleganten solistischen Einblendungen so glatt ins Ohr schleichen. Sondern vor allem deshalb, weil er sich das bewahrt hat, was mit "authentischer Ausstrahlung" nur lückenhaft beschrieben werden kann. Vielleicht ist das biographisch bedingt. Nein, ganz sicher sogar. In Großbritannien geboren, mit der Mutter und dem Großvater im zweiten Lebensjahr nach Israel, ein Jahr später nach Zimbabwe ausgewandert, mit sieben nach Südafrika, mit elf nach Zambia, ein Jahr später zurück nach Johannesburg: Wer so früh immer wieder entwurzelt wird, braucht etwas eigenes. Als der weiße Junge dann den schwarzen Gitarristen Sipho Mchunu kennen lernte, hatte er es gefunden: die Musik. Im Südafrika der 70er Jahre eine brisante Kombination. Johnny Clegg hat wie kaum ein anderer wichtiger Künstler allen Grund dazu, sich weder an Mode-Erscheinungen noch an einer vermuteten Publikumserwartung zu orientieren.
Im Frankfurter Hof danken es ihm die Zuhörer dennoch und deswegen. Mit alten Liedern und neuen Titeln seines gerade erst erschienenen Albums mit dem Titel "New World Survivor" hat er ihren Nerv getroffen, ohne es vielleicht zu wollen.

Das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) nimmt die Besucher auf dem Fan Fest FIFA WM 2006TM mit auf eine außergewöhnliche Reise um die Welt: Akrobatik aus Afrika, Impressionen aus Asien und lateinamerikanische Rhythmen bieten Unterhaltung für Jung und Alt, für Deutschland und die Welt. "Rund ums Leder - weltweit" heißt es beim One World Tag auf der Hauptbühne am Brandenburger Tor. Auf dem Programm stehen Unterhaltung und Informationen rund um das Thema Fußball und ein lebendiger Einblick in das Engagement der deutschen Entwicklungspolitik. Der Eintritt ist frei.
Kaum etwas verbindet die Menschen in der ganzen Welt so sehr wie das Fußballspiel. Über den Sport lernen sich Menschen in aller Welt kennen und verstehen. On 7 July, just two days before the Final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, will be the setting for the biggest single football party ever: The "Football for a Better World - From Germany to South Africa" show will kick off the four-year journey to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a joyful celebration of football and music. Admission is completely FREE for all and the show begins at 18:00 hrs and runs until mid-night.
The show features multi-platinum selling acts from across the globe. Germany is represented by three of its biggest and finest acts: Xavier Naidoo, Wir sind Helden and Die Fantastischen Vier. South American star Ivete Sangalo will bring the samba spirit, Dancehall and Hip Hop superstars Sean Paul Wyclef Jean and Lumidee will be moving the crowd all night long, and further special performances by Patrizio Buanne and other special guest stars are also lined-up.
One of the highlights of the evening will be the super-group put together spontaneously and specially for this show by African music legend Youssou N’Dour. This unique group features fellow African artists such as, Angélique Kidjo, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Vusi Mahlasela, MC Solaar und Rokia Traore. Freshlyground, South Africa’s top selling artists complete the high quality line-up. The show will be presented by popular German TV sports and entertainment anchors Monica Lierhaus and Matthias Opdenhövel and stand-up comedian Michael Mittermeier will present a special set of his unique brand of humour.
High-ranking dignitaries such as the General Secretary of the United Nations Kofi Annan, the President of the Republic of South Africa Thabo Mbeki, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, the President of the 2006 Organising Committee Franz Beckenbauer as well as the Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit will be addressing the show audience in Berlin and millions of television viewers watching the broadcast in over 120 countries. Starkes Gewitter über Berlin
Ein starkes Gewitter hat am frühen Abend für Verkehrsbehinderungen in Berlin gesorgt. Eine U-Bahn-Linie wurde teilweise blockiert, Geschäfte mussten nach Wassereinbruch schließen. Die große Party auf der Fanmeile wurde abgesagt. (07.07.2006, 20:28 Uhr)

Das Konzert fiel ebenso ins Wasser wie die deutsch-afrikanische Party "Fußball für eine bessere Welt" auf der Fanmeile am Brandenburger Tor.
Nach Fifa-Angaben gingen bei der Bühne am Brandenburger Tor 16 Liter Wasser je Quadratmeter nieder. Dies habe einen Einsatz der Show- und Bühnentechnik zu risikoreich gemacht, betonte ein Sprecher des Weltfußballverbandes. Seinen Angaben nach musste wegen des Unwetters auch eine Probe für die Abschlussgala beim Finale am Sonntag unterbrochen werden. Auch das Medienzentrum am Stadion sei nach einem Wassereinbruch evakuiert worden.
Fifa-Präsident Joseph Blatter sagte, die Show sei als ein großes Dankeschön an die Millionen von Fußballfans in Deutschland und der ganzen Welt geplant gewesen, die die Weltmeisterschaft mit ihrem Engagement, ihrer Leidenschaft und mit viel Herz zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis gemacht hätten. "Wir sagen die Show schweren Herzens ab, aber die Sicherheit der Besucher und Künstler gehe vor.

Ausnahmezustand in Berlin
Gewitteralarm in Deutschland: Sturmböen und kräftige Regengüsse sorgten für abgedeckte Dächer und überschwemmte Straßen. In Berlin rief die Feuerwehr den Ausnahmezustand aus. Die deutsch-afrikanische Party "Fußball für eine bessere Welt" wurde abgesagt.
Zu dem Konzert auf der Bühne vor dem Brandenburger Tor waren mehrere tausend Besucher erwartet worden. Stattdessen eröffnete sich auf der Straße des 17. Juni am Abend ein ganz anderes Bild: Das Wasser stand knöcheltief auf den Fahrbahnen. Kaum ein Besucher verirrte sich auf die Fanmeile, die in den vergangenen Wochen massenhaft bevölkert worden war.
Mit dem Konzert wollte die Fifa symbolisch die Übergabe der Fußball-WM 2010 an Südafrika feiern. Blitz, Donner, Orkanböen und heftige Regenfälle hatten den Organisatoren der bisher größten Fußball-Party einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. In den 90er Jahren feierte Johnny Clegg mit seiner Band Savuka in ganz Europa Triumphe. Titel wie "Asimbonanga" oder "Scatterlings of Africa" wurden selbst in Deutschland im Radio rauf und runter gespielt, in Frankreich bekam die Band einen "Victoires de la musique" Preis, in den USA wurden sie für einen Grammy nominiert.
Sein neues Album "New World Survivor" wurde in seiner Heimat Südafrika nach kurzer Zeit „vergoldet“. Afrique du Sud. Sipho reparti auprès des siens, Johnny Clegg poursuit avec Savuka en
1985. Son succès est phénoménal avec Third World Child et Asimbonanga. Depuis, le
Zoulou blanc a parcouru le monde, sorti d’autres albums et surtout, est resté fidèle à luimême!

There's also the French language mailing list (inmyafricandream) for keeping
up to date with French tour dates etc.

I think most people are happy with the Scatterlings list, provided that we
use 'OT' for off-topic discussions. As someone mentioned, if people don't
want to receive lots of emails then they can change their setting to just
receive the digest or else just view messages on the web.

The description of the new list is "A discussion group about the South
African artist Johnny Clegg and his bands, Juluka and Savuka.

What is the distinguishing factor between that and the Scatterlings list?

If people wish to have 'pure' discussions about JC then the official
discussion board (URL above) can be used for that. Having another list will
simply split things up - people will become confused as to which list is the
best list to keep in touch about tour dates and albums etc. People will end
up having to join multiple lists just so as they don't miss out on any vital
info and I really don't want to have to join another list...!!

Depuis 15 ans ils participent à des festivals de musiques traditionnelles à travers le monde, mais ils n'étaient encore jamais venus en Bretagne. Leur chant diphonique et leurs instruments acoustiques allaient-ils séduire des oreilles plus habituées à Benabar ou Jonhy clegg. On Monday 27th August 2007, a historic gathering of top South African artists came together to perform for the music video of a brand new version of a timeless South African musical classic - Johnny Clegg's 'Spirit of the Great Heart'.  Produced by award-winning artist, Michael Canfield, this multi-generational, musically-diverse group has pooled their talents to collaborate on the vocals and visuals of one of South Africa's most loved songs - all in support of the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, an international development charity that supports over 34,000 orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa.
 The new 'Spirit of the Great Heart' single features many award winning South African talents including Johnny Clegg, Arno Carstens, Karen Zoid, Josie Field, Chris Chameleon, Danny K, Proverb , Cito (Wonderboom), Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, The Bala Brothers, Kahn Morbee (Parlotones' frontman), Louise Carver, Dr. Victor, The Holy Cross Choir, Brenda Burnit & Michael Canfield/ RhythmSectionAfrica feat. Alistair Coakley - all in a combined effort to raise awareness and bring life, hope and opportunity to orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa.
 'We are simply astounded by the generosity and passion that everyone involved in this project has shown.  By using their time, talents and resources the South African music and filming industries have helped us to inspire thousands of South Africans to stand up and make a difference to the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children,' says, Kelli Givens, Resource Development Manager for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation. 'This amazing effort will show the global community that citizens from all walks of life are indeed stimulating a bright future for South Africa.'
 Cameron Cozens made his directorial debut with the music video of 'Spirit of the Great Heart' which he also wrote and produced.  Shot on 35 mm, the video takes the viewer into the heart of the Starfish Greathearts Foundation and aims to mobilise and inspire a global community to make a difference - one child at a time.
 Each of the artists involved has provided a track that will feature in addition to 'Spirit of the Great Heart' single along with the music video and other special material on a compilation CD called 'Spirit of the Great Hearts' that will be released by Gallo Record Company on 16 November and will be available in stores nationwide at a cost of R149.  All profits from the sale of the compilation CD including 100% of the artists' royalties on the new Greatheart track will go directly to benefit the Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

C'est désormais officiel : la France fabrique un super-missile, le M51, qui sera équipé de mini-têtes nucléaires d'attaque : après les Etats-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne, elle rompt avec la traditionnelle doctrine de la dissuasion pour adopter la guerre préventive à l'arme nucléaire !
Le lieu du crime ? Le Centre d'Essais des Landes, près de Biscarosse, à 50 km de Bordeaux, où sera testé cette année le missile M51. Avec une portée de 10.000 km et une précision jamais égalée, il menacera la planète entière de ses mini-têtes nucléaires d'attaque ! Ces essais sont une violation flagrante du traité de non-prolifération, qui commande à la France de désarmer.
Avec une large coalition d'associations (ATTAC, le Réseau Sortir du Nucléaire, le Mouvement de la Paix, Greenpeace, le MAN, les faucheurs volontaires... ) et le soutien de forces politiques progressistes, est organisé les 22-24 septembre prochains :
- Une 'inspection citoyenne' du Centre d'essais des Landes, près de Bordeaux. Comme le feraient des inspecteurs de l'ONU chargés de vérifier le respect du traité de non-prolifération, et afin d'obtenir l'arrêt des essais du M51 qui s'y dérouleront à l'automne, nous procéderons symboliquement à une inspection de ce site militaire nucléaire, ce qui ne s'est jamais fait en France.
- Des forums et 3 concerts (à prix libre ! ), chaque soir, avec des artistes qui s'engagent contre le M51 et ses mini-bombes nucléaires : Mouss et Hakim de Zebda, High Tone, Bombes 2 bal, la compagnie Jolie Môme, Johnny Clegg, les Motivés, la Ruda, les Ogres de Barback, Marcel et son Orchestre, 113, La Phaze, Riké (Sinsemilia), Enhancer, High Tone, Tagada Jones, Desert Rebel, et la participation exceptionnelle d'un groupe mythique bien connu des militants.

I ve the cd album "ONE LIFE" since yesturday and my first opinion after several listens is good. "ONE LIFE" is perfect, the clegg touch is here into the lyrics and of course, into the sound. But, the "new world survivor" experience is not renewed. Only the machines voice is kept
On the new album, the style changes again, "ONE LIFE" is the crossing beetwen the old juluka (it lacks only Sipho) for the lyrics and the last savuka album for the sound and the mixture is almost perfect. For information, the old concertina is here and in almost every title.
Every tracks are very different into the style, we have of the pop/rock, the reggae, the zoulou song and many more. Of course, the first style is in zoulou !!! For "
Utshani Obulele" in zoulou version, the sound changes
The total times is 57 minutes and 52 second, what of the happiness !!!!! And, "ONE LIFE" is a rainbow of culture mixing the colors of language (english, zoulou, french and afrikaans)
The cd is presented in a case in box, with 1books on which figures lyrics and photos of Clegg, what's more memoires of Clegg for every song.
16 tracks for "one life", good job mister Clegg !!!!!

It got him arrested and banned from the airwaves but he carried on and now Clegg has become world-reknowned for his blend of Western rock and pop with African sounds. Now, more than a decade after the end of Apartheid, Johnny Clegg is still speaking out - he tells Mark Coles just what is bothering him these days.

Scats, don't miss the "Vis-a-Vis" video with Idir and Johnny--it's an hour well spent, with candid glimpses into Johnny's life in South Africa. As the show started, I kept hearing a rooster crow. As the day wore on, the chickens were getting noisier and noisier. Eventually, Johnny had to take a break and feed them. I couldn't help but laugh; this was not something I ever expected to see-- Johnny Clegg feeding chickens!
It was a turbulent time in South Africa. Even Johnny wouldn't go into the townships unescorted at that time. It was the year after Dudu was killed, but it shows fascinating footage of him in his village. Savuka is shown playing (I believe Tough Enough) at some sort of fair. Later in the show, Johnny was worried about Solly who was missing for a couple of days. Johnny plays a few traditional songs, even Kwakhal' Inkomo Nembuzi (which we've heard on Cologne Zulu festival CD). I don't know all the musicians, but I think two of them were a young Mandy and Andy! Johnny is shown making and demonstrating the "mouth bow". While Johnny talks about his mother's influence in his life, she is shown listening (and singing along) to the Crossing while hugging a dog.

Es ist vollbracht: soeben erschien das neue Album von Johnny Clegg, „One Life“, und nun kann es tatsächlich los gehen mit der Europatournee, die in den vergangenen 12 Monaten leider zweimal verschoben werden musste. All diejenigen, die sich im Vorfeld bereits Tickets erworben hatten, bitten der Künstler wie auch wir von der FABRIK um Verständnis.
Es ist die Präsentation der aktuellen CD, die den Südafrikaner mit seiner Band nach Europa führen wird. Sie heißt „One Life“ und ist eine Reflektion über die Dinge, die wir mit unserem Leben tun, das uns gegeben wurde, wie Clegg selbst über das Album sagt. „Ich habe einige sehr frühe musikalische Wurzeln und Einflüsse, die mein Leben als Junge im Johannesburg der späten 60er und 70er Jahre prägten, neu aufgegriffen. Neben der traditionellen Zulu-Gitarrenmusik haben vor allem die traditionellen Männer-Chorgesänge bei den Isishameni und Umzansi-Kriegstänzen einen tiefen Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen, der sich in einigen Songs auf dem neuen Album wiederspiegelt. Ich habe auch die Zulu-Concertina benutzt. Johnny Clegg, der »weiße Zulu«
Das war schon immer die Idee des Gitarristen und Sängers Johnny Clegg, der in Johannesburg aufwuchs, und den man den "weißen Zulu" nennt. Und sehr frei und selbstverständlich bediente sich der engagierte Apartheids-Gegner stets aus den verschiedensten musikalischen Töpfen.
Jetzt hat Clegg ein neues Album vorgelegt. "One Life" klingt wie viele Welten, die zu einer zusammengewachsen sind: HipHop, Britrock, die Gitarren-Stile Westafrikas, Rap, Pop, ja sogar Mariachi, all das steckt heute in der Musik von Johnny Clegg. Und er ist noch immer ein politischer Musiker, singt über die dringlichen Probleme seines Landes, die der Wanderarbeiter etwa, genauso wie über Armut und Kindersoldaten, doch auch über die ganz persönlichen Erfahrungen als Musiker. Der "weiße Zulu" kommt in die Fabrik
Unangepasst ist Johnny Clegg schon immer gewesen. Als er im Alter von 15 Jahren im südafrikanischen Soweto den Zulu Mntonanazo Mzila kennenlernte, war dies ein prägendes Erlebnis für den in Großbritannien geborenen Südafrikaner.
In Zeiten der Apartheid propagierte er die Verständigung zwischen Schwarz und Weiß, gründete gemeinsam mit dem Zulu-Wanderarbeiter Sipho Mchunu Juluka die erste gemischtrassige Popband Südafrikas, die den Mächtigen in Johannesburg stets ein Dorn im Auge war. Die 1985 gegründete Juluka-Nachfolgeband Savuka hatte auch in Europa Hits, ist inzwischen aber ebenfalls Geschichte. Nach einer längeren Zwischenphase, in der der "weiße Zulu" außerhalb Südafrikas kaum noch zu hören war, meldet er sich jetzt mit der CD "One Life" zurück.
Nicht nur, dass Johnny Clegg sich erneut als Schöpfer tanzbarster Ethnopop-Melodien beweist, er bleibt auch seinem politischen Anspruch treu. So mahnt er in "Faut Pas Baisser Les Bras" Achtsamkeit gegenüber der Beschneidung von Grundrechten in demokratischen Gesellschaften an, setzt sich in "Boy Soldier" mit dem furchtbaren Schicksal der Kindersoldaten auseinander und warnt in "The Revolution Will Eat Its Children" vor möglichen negativen Folgen politischer Umbrüche.

In den späten sechziger und frühen siebziger Jahren war das politische Klima in Südafrika nicht besonders freundlich für einen weißen, Englisch sprechenden Jungen, der mit schwarzen Afrikanern in der Öffentlichkeit Zulu Musik spielte. Clegg gründete zusammen mit Sipho Mchunu, einem Zulu Wanderarbeiter, JULUKA, die erste gemischtrassige Band in Südafrika.
Die Band verband Sprachen, Kulturen und musikalische Elemente aus Afrika und dem Westen – ein Schlag ins Gesicht der rassistischen Gesellschaft. In den frühen achtziger Jahren tourte die Band erfolgreich durch Europa und Nordamerika.
1985 trennte sich Juluka, und Clegg gründete SAVUKA. Im Vergleich zu Juluka, die hauptsächlich lokale Zulu und Englische Folk Rock Elemente verband, ging Savuka sehr viel weiter mit der Einbeziehung von Zentral – und Westafrikanischen Gitarrenstilen und diversen internationalen Rock – und Popelementen.
Berlin Kuperfessel 2006Bis Ende 1989 hatte die Band über eine Million Exemplare ihres Debutalbums verkauft, und das zweite Album erreichte 700 000 Verkäufe. Das 4. Album wurde 1993 für den Grammy als bestes Weltmusikalbum nominiert. Savuka trennte sich 1994, und Clegg und Sipho Mchunu wagten einen neuen Versuch mit Juluka, ein cross-over Album mit dem Titel "Crocodile Love" (1997).
Danach wurde es etwas ruhiger um den "weißen Zulu". Das Album "New World Survivor", das in Südafrika 2002 immerhin Goldstatus erlangte, wurde in Europa gar nicht erst herausgebracht - in Zeiten, wo eine ganze Industrie von Kuschelrock compilations und gecasteten "Superstars" lebt, hatte niemand den Mut, ein "Nischenprodukt" zu veröffentlichen.
Ein Fehler, denn diese "Nische" ist quick lebendig! In den vergangenen fünf Jahren konnte man auf Cleggs Konzerten in München Fans treffen, die eigens aus Dänemark angereist waren - nach Würselen(!!) bei Aachen kamen nicht etwa nur Holländer, sondern auch Wiener.
Die Leute wissen, wofür sie ihren Urlaub opfern – Konzerte mit der Johnny Clegg Band, wie sie jetzt heißt, sind unvergessliche Erlebnisse, von denen man nicht nur viel Energie und gute Laune mit nach Hause nimmt, sondern gerne auch ein Souvenir.

Bild aus der Morgenpost Es gibt Musiker, die in ein Umfeld geboren werden, in dem sie allein durch ihre Faszination an einer bestimmten Musik notgedrungen auch zu politisch engagierten Künstlern werden. Der Engländer Johnny Clegg landete als Kind mit seiner Mutter erst in Rhodesien, dem heutigen Simbabwe, später in Südafrika. Und hegte eine frühe Begeisterung für die rituelle Musik und die Tänze der Zulu.
Gemeinsam mit dem Zulu-Wanderarbeiter Sipho Mchunu gründete er Juluka, die erste gemischtrassige Band Südafrikas. Ein Schlag ins Gesicht der rassistischen Apartheid-Gesellschaft in den späten 60er und frühen 70er Jahren. Juluka verband Sprachen und musikalische Elemente Afrikas mit weißem Pop, 1979 erschien das erste Album "Universal Men".
Juluka stand in totalem Widerspruch zu den Rassentrennungsgesetzen. Ihr Publikum konnten sie wegen Zensur und Verboten nur live erreichen. Ihre Platten wurden Hits, obwohl sie im Rundfunk nicht gespielt wurden.
Bei uns wurde Johnny Clegg mit seiner Mitte der 80er-Jahre gegründeten zweiten Band Savuka bekannt, vor allem durch das Album "Scatterlings" mit einer gelungenen Verbindung von Rock und Township Jive.
Nach längerer Pause ist gerade ein neues Album von Johnny Clegg erschienen. Auf "One Life" verbindet er wieder unterschiedlichste Stile zu einem großen bewegenden Ganzen, traditionelle afrikanische Chorgesänge treffen da auf HipHop-Elemente, Kriegstänze auf pulsiernde Latin-Rhythmen. Der 53jährige Musiker umarmt die ganze weite Welt des Pop und entführt auf eine rhythmische Reise, die live zu einem einzigen, großartigen Fest wird. Heute bietet sich die Gelegenheit, Johnny Clegg und seine wunderbaren Musiker auf der Bühne zu erleben. Und es wird im Kesselhaus wohl keinen geben, der dabei noch stillstehen kann.

Der Südafrikaner Johnny Clegg bleibt eine bedeutende Stimme des Protests im südlichen Afrika. Seine neue Platte heisst «One Life».

Vier lange Jahre nach seiner letzten CD «New World Survivor» wartet der südafrikanische Songwriter Johnny Clegg mit neuen Liedern auf. Die Apartheid ist längst weg, doch Südafrika bleibt infolge des gigantischen sozialen Gefälles ein Pulverfass. Auf «One Life» nimmt Clegg öfters zu den Problemen seiner Heimat Stellung, transferiert die Themen jedoch ins Übernationale.
«The Revolution Will Eat It’s Children» etwa beschäftigt sich mit Revoluzzern, die die Mächtigen stürzen, um sich selbst skrupellos der Macht zu bedienen. Gerade dieser Song benutzt jene stets etwas überziselierten Popsounds und hohen, krächzenden Stimmpassagen, mit denen sich der «weisse Zulu» - es dürfte sich dabei schlicht um eine musikalische Verwandtschaft handeln - als eine Art Ethno-Sting outet.
Urbaner klingen Songs wie «Utshani Obulele», bei dem die Pop-Glätte effektvoll mit intimen, ganz nach vorn gemischten Gesängen eines Zulu-Männerchores kontrastiert wird. Und ein unvermittelt losdengelndes, an Lennons «Instant Karma» erinnerndes Riffdreschen mit Echokammereffekt, wie es das ironisch-machistische «Bull Heart» prägt, wirkt nach den warmen Zulu-Vokalisen von «Devana» als ebenso cleverer Kniff. Kühler Pop für die handfesten Konflikte, wärmendes Feuer der Zulu-Gesänge für das gefühlvoll Persönliche - alles ist gut durchdacht, und manchmal überrascht Clegg auch mit neuen rhythmischen Varianten. Der Opener «Daughter Of Eden» etwa baut auf eine schreitende afrokubanische Guajira-Rhythmik.  [ZT 08.11.2006]

Johnny Clegg is in France and its a pity that we weren't able to round up more of us to attend the show on the 19th of November. There definitely needs to be a system in place to let everybody know what's happening. I Will scan the papers, magazine, metros, internet, etc for anything interesting happening and post it on this blog. If you hear of anything or have a suggestion for some kind of activity send it to me at socialclubbing@gmail.com and I will put it up. Last week I was chatting to a friend from SA and she was telling me that she was finding it hard to adapt. She said she found Paris lonely and she was bored. Now, there must be something wrong if you are BORED in Paris. Come now people lets make the most of it.

Le grand retour du «Zoulou Blanc» Ses tubes Scatterlings of Africa et Asimbonanga (hymne écrit pour Nelson Mandela) l’ont élevé au rang mondial. Dans la vie et dans ses textes, Johnny Clegg a toujours milité pour la justice et aspiré au mélange des musiques et des cultures.

« J’ai mis à peu près quatorze mois à écrire «One Life». C’est un recueil de moments d’une vie. J’y ai revisité mes premières sources, les influences musicales du jeune garçon qui a grandi à Johannesburg dans les années 60-70.
La guitare traditionnelle zouloue, mais aussi des chœurs d’hommes dans les danses guerrières ISISHAMENI et UMZANSI m’avaient profondément marqué, et ces influences se retrouvent dans pas mal de morceaux de l’album. J’ai également utilisé le concertina et l’arc à bouche zoulou. Puis je suis allé vers d’autres paysages rythmiques en posant la musique sur des cadences latines, africaines, rock ou hip hop.
«One life» est aussi une réflexion sur ce qu’on fait de la vie qui nous est donnée, et ce parcours est le lien entre toutes ces chansons … »

Le "zoulou blanc" se produira dimanche à Paris (Grand Rex) avant d'autres concerts en France.
"C'est un classique +Johnny Clegg mélange+", déclare Clegg à l'AFP, dans un français maladroit. Dès les années 70, ce jeune blanc rebelle remua les consciences en épousant la cause zoulou, fréquentant les townships et s'affichant dans des formations multiraciales.
On retrouve sur "One Life" les caractéristiques de sa musique, combinaison à haute teneur énergétique de rythmes binaires du rock et de polyphonies vocales zoulou, qui a fait sa réputation dans les tubes "Scatterlings from Africa" (1982) ou "Asimbonanga" (1987).
Mais Clegg, 53 ans, toujours en prise avec les bouleversements de la société sud-africaine, y intègre de nouvelles données. "Il y a du hip hop, du raï, du reggae, de la dance music, du kwaito", explique le musicien, qui joue de la guitare acoustique, des claviers, du concertina.
Mixé dans les studios Real World de Peter Gabriel en Angleterre, "One Life" emprunte également au reggae et à l'afro-cubain, mais le côté rock et pop y prend petit à petit le pas sur la partie "roots" et "world".
Sur cet album, Clegg s'exprime en quatre langues. "Je chante en anglais, en zoulou" (que cet ancien étudiant en anthropologie maîtrise à la perfection), "mais aussi en afrikaans (NDLR: langue des afrikaaners, communauté blanche d'Afrique du Sud d'origine néerlandaise qui systématisa l'apartheid en 1948) dans un but de réconciliation, et en scamto, nouveau langage codé des jeunes des townships", raconte l'ancien leader des groupes Savuka et Juluka.
Via ce nouveau disque, publié simultanément en Europe, aux Etats-Unis, au Canada et dans une partie de l'Afrique, Clegg souhaite s'extirper du statut de figure historique de la lutte anti-apartheid, dont il est prisonnier. Il veut regagner une crédibilité dans son pays, où Freshly Ground, un nouveau groupe de pop multi-racial, est aujourd'hui plus connu que lui.
"Je travaille très dur pour me refaire", avoue ce combattant, qui a englouti une partie de ses économies dans une entreprise de production musicale qui a fait faillite.
Après le concert (complet) au Grand Rex dimanche, avec en première partie The Gospel Choir of Soweto, Johnny Clegg jouera à Nevers le 23, Luxembourg le 24, Mantes-la-Jolie le 25 et Saint-Quentin le 28. Une tournée en Europe et aux Etats-Unis est prévue au printemps.
Sans doute gratifiera-t-il encore son public de ses fameuses danses guerrières zoulou, rituel qui a toujours fait partie d'un show mené tambour battant.

Vingt ans après son premier concert en France - au festival Musiques métisses d’Angoulême -, qui l’a propulsé sur la scène internationale, Johnny Clegg nous revient. Il présente son CD, One Life, dans le cadre d’une tournée européenne.
Comment avez-vous abordé la conception de votre nouvel album, One Life ?
Johnny Clegg. Je cultive la même démarche : exprimer le fruit de mes observations, mes réflexions, mes déceptions, mes rêves. La société sud-africaine est traversée par de grands débats. Il y a deux mois, le gouvernement a tenté de censurer la presse. Je suis totalement solidaire de la lutte contre ce genre de dérive.
Vous rappelez volontiers que nous sommes à l’ère d’une société de l’information. Quels sont les enjeux ?
Johnny Clegg. Ils sont multiples. L’accès à l’information digitale, par Internet, par satellite, etc., constitue une révolution, dans le sens où cela devrait permettre une vraie liberté individuelle pour s’informer. Mais une révolution non maîtrisée. En définitive, le quidam a l’impression d’avoir accès à toute l’information qu’il veut. Mais il n’a pas les outils pour analyser et filtrer l’avalanche qui lui tombe dessus, de la publicité à la pornographie, en passant par une quantité de news livrées en vrac sans hiérarchie au niveau du sens. Le problème de l’éducation se pose, à tous les niveaux, de façon cruciale. Cette situation apprête le lit des extrêmes, que ceux-ci soient politiques ou religieux.
Avez-vous remarqué que les grandes chaînes de télévision, en France, accordent peu de place aux journalistes et présentateurs d’origine étrangère, notamment africaine ?
Johnny Clegg. Oui, c’est frappant. Ça me sidère, de la part d’un pays comme la France, considéré comme la patrie des droits de l’homme. Cette discrimination, qui n’a rien d’anecdotique, est le révélateur d’une grave réalité : nombre de responsables politiques français ne se rendent pas compte que le fait de fermer la porte des médias ou de refuser des postes de responsabilité à un pan important de la population française ne peut qu’engendrer, au sein de celle-ci, de profondes frustrations. La jeunesse issue de ces couches sociales ne peut pas se forger de modèles, hormis le terrain qu’on leur laisse - sport, musique. C’est un grand défi de la France : donner leurs chances à tous les citoyens.
Nelson Mandela est-il toujours un héros, pour la jeunesse sud-africaine ?
Johnny Clegg. Oui. Il a donné une leçon majeure aux Africains, en décidant, de lui-même, de quitter le pouvoir, à la différence de Robert Mugabe, auquel je consacre un titre dans mon CD, disant que la Révolution dévore ses enfants. Quand il a été question que Thabo Mbeki ait un troisième mandat, je n’ai pas été le seul à être choqué. Ainsi, il n’allait pas suivre l’exemple de Mandela ? J’ai été offusqué quand j’ai entendu Mugabe parler de « mon Zimbabwe », faisant ainsi de la nation sa propriété privée. L’ANC, qui s’est laissé progressivement transformé en représentant d’une bourgeoisie nationale, doit faire preuve de vigilance. Il y a un fossé énorme avec le peuple, confronté à 30 % de chômage. Vers la mi-octobre, le Parti communiste sud-africain a pris son autonomie, afin de pouvoir s’affirmer et agir comme un parti indépendant.
Comment percevez-vous l’initiative du Parti communiste ?
Johnny Clegg. Je la trouve très positive. Le Parti communiste n’a plus les mêmes objectifs que les dirigeants de l’ANC. Il continue de se battre pour les classes laborieuses. L’industrie est en crise. Les cinq dernières années, 150 000 emplois ont été perdus. On dénombre 3 à 5 millions d’immigrés, venant de divers points du continent. D’où une xénophobie croissante. Un phénomène inquiétant. Le boycott, au temps de l’apartheid, avait empêché le développement du crime international, lequel, depuis, a explosé. De la lutte contre l’apartheid, nous avons dû passer - très rapidement - à la lutte pour la démocratie, le droit au travail pour tous, un meilleur partage des richesses, la défense des acquis sociaux. C’est le message qui habite la plupart de mes chansons. Nous devons nous battre pour ces idéaux et, comme je le dis dans une chanson que je chante en français dans mon disque : Faut pas baisser les bras.

A 53 ans. Johnny Clegg, dont la ressemblance avec Joe Cooker est de plus en plus frappante, n'a rien perdu de sa voix ni de .son énergie. Massif, trapu, il virevolte, tourne comme une toupie sur les morceaux du nouvel album, qui explore des styles comme le hip-hop„ le raï. les rythmes afro-cubains et le reggae. At 53 years old Johnny Clegg is now a seasoned performer and his first album in four years, One Life, shows he is still a potent force in South African music, writes Jeremy Kuper
Johnny Clegg still dances every Sunday in the Zulu hostels around Johannesburg, where he is now an elder and referred to as Umgangabovu, which means “the bleeding shins”. “I’m an old man, so if I stamp the ground my shins bleed,” he explains. “It’s typical Zulu, vivid, violent imagery.”
Clegg started the day in Cape Town promoting his latest album. He returned to Jo’burg for evening dance rehearsals followed by a late-night interview with me, before setting off the following morning for Durban and the Cape again.
At 53 years old, he is now a seasoned performer and his first album in four years, One Life, shows he is still a potent force in South African music. It also marks a new beginning for the white Zulu, who sings in Afrikaans for the first time with the song Thamela: Die Son Trek Water. Clegg says that this Afrikaans volkslied (folk song) is his favourite at the moment. “It is important to recognise Afrikaans as an African language.”
He even sings in French for an upbeat African tune entitled Faut Pas Baisser Les Bras, and there is a Latin-inspired number, Daughter of Eden. But fans can rest assured that Clegg is still in touch with his Zulu musical roots.
“We were not just mixing music, melody and rhythm.” Clegg reflects on his early days as the frontman of his original band, Juluka. “We were also mixing language,” he says, referring to his distinctive blend of Zulu and English, which clearly resonates on the new album. “Crossover is what I do. I have always wanted to mix language. I made world music before there was a word for it.”
Performance and dance have always been a central component of Clegg’s stage presence, and it was certainly a rare privilege to be given exclusive access to his dance rehearsal just before he left for his forthcoming European tour.
When I arrived at the studio, Clegg was busily choreographing young Zulu dancers and a group of break-dancers. Seamlessly blending old and new, urban and rural, all the vibrancy was still there.
Clegg describes how he has “always been shaped by the Zulu values”, which he has adhered to since he was a youngster. “When the chips were down in my life, it was these values that enabled me to continue.
“There were these values of inkhani, which means stubborn determination. Ukuzimisela, which means to cause yourself to stand prepared. The Zulu never go into war, or any kind of conflict, without preparation. Correct preparation is critical.” He reflects also on “the tragedy of being a man, and the tragedy of constantly needing to reinforce your status against all of the other men the area”. Most of all, his Zulu way of life has taught him about endurance and that “life is an endurance test”.
In classic Johnny Clegg style, political protest is never far away on this album. Of course, the issues have changed, and he insists that “culture should never be used as a weapon” as that “reduces its value”. But, he says, “You can make statements about the political realm that bring attention to the situation. I’ve just done this with a very hard-hitting song against Robert Mugabe [The Revolution Will Eat Its Children].” The song is also about “the inability of certain African leaders to relinquish power when it is time to do so”. There is also a song against the use of children as soldiers. “I’ve always spoken out about things.”
In relation to the future, the white Zulu’s optimism shines through. “The country is currently thundering forwards on the sheer momentum of transformation, which is just pushing us through the crime, through the unemployment. At some point it is going to have to deal with these issues.”
He refers to the dangers of xenophobia towards the many African migrants in the country, but that his “experience has been very positive”.So I ask if one day we might even get a Nigerian Zulu. “You never know,” he laughs.

Johnny Clegg, a South African rock star who performs around the world, has opened an e-waste recycling factory near Johannesburg and plans a $10 million facility near Cape Town as a means to stop dumping and create jobs.

BENONI, South Africa — When he's not touring, recording or writing songs, Johnny Clegg leads an unusual life for a rock star — running a computer recycling factory and planning an e-waste recovery project of global scope.
Many Africans decry the dumping on their continent of electronic waste from the United States and Europe.
But Clegg, who became known as "White Zulu" for his music and his anti-apartheid politics, welcomes e-waste imports as a way to put thousands of people to work recycling.
"People won't need to throw their old computers in landfills. They won't have to hide them in Nigeria," he said, referring to a dumping ground where thousands of American computers end up burned or in landfills.
Clegg is a South African guitarist and prolific songwriter best known for his work with two bands, Juluka and Savuka, and his concerts around the world.
Clegg's African Sky Co., named for a song he wrote, has opened one computer recycling plant near Johannesburg, where he lives. Six minutes is all it takes for the workers, dressed in blue coveralls and matching hard hats, to break down a computer into recyclable metals, plastics and glass. Of 2 million pounds of e-waste handled by African Sky during the first six months of the year, just 20,000 pounds went into landfills as unrecoverable wastes. The venture is now turning a profit, he says.
In his factory recently, Clegg, 53, spoke of the future as excitedly as he sings and dances on stage. He showed off blueprints for a $10 million, ultramodern factory that would recycle e-waste from Europe and the United States and put 17,000 people from townships near Cape Town to work.
Clegg has long been associated with causes benefiting South Africa's oppressed. Before the apartheid system of racial separation crumbled in the early 1990s, he was jailed for refusing to leave black townships. His early recordings blending Western and African music were banned from radio.
Clegg's e-waste venture began with a question: "Where does your computer go to die?"
He learned that it might very well end up polluting African land and water with a gumbo of metal wastes in digital dumps.
When social injustice prevailed in South Africa, the environment suffered. As Clegg observed, "You can't ask someone being treated in an undignified way to treat the earth in a dignified way."
But with black rule established and the nation largely stable, Clegg believes that both the environment and the unemployed stand to benefit from his e-waste vision.
"This is the first business I've been in that's directly linked to the well-being of the planet. I think that's a good thing," he said.

Johnny Clegg’s concerts are rousing, emotionally draining, dance-inducing, joyous celebrations. Clegg was born in England in the ’50s, but his family soon moved to Zimbabwe, where he grew up, and later South Africa. A chance encounter with a Zulu street guitarist led him to explore Zulu culture. In the early ’70s Clegg teamed up with the Zulu migrant worker/musician Sipho Mchunu. As Juluka, they made history by defying the strict apartheid government and becoming the first mixed-race band to play together. Juluka melded the predominant Zulu sound (with its fierce mbaqanga rhythms) with Celtic callings from Clegg’s origins. They built a huge national following through their powerful live performances, which included convincing displays of traditional Zulu indlamu (foot stomping) dancing by Clegg. The band recorded two platinum and five gold albums, and the single Scatterlings of Africa brought worldwide success. Following the group’s disbanding in 1986, Clegg continued to blend African music with European pop influences with the band Savuka. The group’s debut album, Third World Child, sold over two million copies. The Johnny Clegg Band revisits the music of Juluka and Savuka—two of the greatest bands in South African pop music history.

Born in England, Johnny was raised in his mother’s native land of Zimbabwe before immigrating to South Africa at the age of nine.  At the age of 14, Johnny began to learn to play the guitar.  In 1976 Johnny and Sipho Mchunu secured a major recording deal and had their first hit sing entitled, Woza Friday.  A period of development followed, during which Johnny worked on the concept of bringing together English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures.  The formation of Juluka (meaning “sweat” in Zulu) was in total contravention of the cultural segregation laws of the time, which emphasized the separation of language, race and culture.  After the break up of Juluka, Johnny put together another band and called it Savuka mixing African music with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds.  The Johnny Clegg Band will perform music drawn from all eras of this remarkable musician’s career.
This performance is a co-production with the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

It's part of their World Music Series. The Johnny Clegg concert got included

Not only was the fact of the success of Juluka (which openly celebrated African culture in a non-racial band) a thorn in the flesh of a political system based on racial separation, Clegg’s band also produced some explicitly political songs. From 1985 to 1993, Clegg & Savuka enjoyed world success with gold- and platinum-selling albums such as Third World Child, Shadow Man, Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World, Heat, Dust & Dreams and chart hits including “Scatterlings Of Africa,” “I Call Your Name” and ”Asimbonanga” which became an anthem for South Africans, calling for the release of Nelson Mandela, and honoring the names of three representative martyrs of the South African liberation struggle.

JC at Lebanon Opera House
Hey all -
Well, I finally heard from the Lebanon Opera House.
Sad but true, JC's appearance has been "postponed due to an unavoidable change in the artist's schedule".
The Opera House is "currently in negotiation" with JC's management to reschedule, and management "has indicated that the most likely touring timeframe will be Fall of 2007".
Bummed, but still holding my tickets (which the Opera House will, of course, honor).

I called the concert location in Delaware and they indicated that the JC date
in February 2007 had been cancelled.

I received a certified letter from the Grand Opera House in Wilmington
Delware stating the Johnny Clegg performance on February 8, 2007 has
been CANCELLED. They offered a refund on the tickets or to exchange
them for another event. I guess that makes it as offical as it can
get.

February 23, 2007. The show was originally scheduled to be held at The
Spectrum on the same date but the venue has been adjusted. Anyone
holding tickets for the originally scheduled Spectrum show will be

This is all I was able to get from Mr. Kaplan who is an Agent who handles Johnny's tours. I don't know why they even talked about a NA tour if they didn't have a release - unless the NA release plans fell through and they aren't going to release it in the US or at least not right away.

Spier festival launched

THE 11th Spier Arts Summer Season in partnership with Hollard kicks off in December and continues until March next year.

The format for this year's season includes several smaller festivals within the main programme. The festival programme was officially announced at the Spier International Poetry Exchange. This event is organised in association with Winternachten, a literary festival based in The Hague.

The Spier African Music Festival, which is the first festival this season, has become a well-established crowd-puller. It has been associated with big names such as Baaba Maal, Johnny Clegg and Hugh Masekela. This year there is no shortage of talent with the likes of Salif Keita, Jimmy Dludlu, Dorothy Masuka, Zamajobe, Lebo Mathosa and Rus Nerwich.
