Johnny Clegg returns to Auckland on his third tour Down Under, this time to launch his latest album Human.
As an icon of South Africa, he continues to draw on various styles and genres of music. His creativity lies in his in-depth understanding of traditional Zulu rhythm and the dance routines which are a feature of the show.
The opening track of Human, 'Love in the time of Gaza' meshes the aforementioned Zulu rhythm template with an arrangement that could have easily have worked in a Mercury-era of “Tears for Fears” released to chronicle his quest for optimism in the ongoing unrest that has plagued the nations of Israel and Palestine since the Biblical days.
The show will include his greatest hits such as Impi, Scatterlings of Africa, African Sky Blue, I Call your Name and many well-known favourites that pack his ninety minute performance.

The line-up for WOMADelaide 2012 has been announced with Johnny Clegg, Eddi Reader and Blue King Brown some of the names that leap out of the list.
Clegg is South Africa’s biggest male star. He was last in Australia in 2009. Scotland’s Eddi Reader was formerly the lead singer of Fairground Attraction and had the hit ‘Perfect’ in 1988. Australia’s Blue King Brown have become one of the most popular live acts in the country.
The WOMADelaide line-up also features Tinariwen, The Master Drummers Of Burundi, Shivkumar Sharma, Sharon Shannon, Diego Guerrero Septet, First Aid Kit, Groundation and Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.
Dates are March 9 to 12, 2012 at the Botanical Park in Adelaide.

  As easy on the ears as it was soothing for the soul, Johnny Clegg’s high-energy set at Club Soda packed the venue Friday night.
  The South African singer and musician is, of course, a political songwriter, and his between-song stories and mini-history lessons (he alternated between French and English Friday night) are always a cherished part of the experience. His splendid, gently rant about the recent “discovery” that social friction is reflected in nature, delivered before Digging For Some Words, was a typical delight.
  But what fills the room is the fact that Clegg is a rocker and a showman. He remains in almost constant motion, delivering infectious, highly tuneful, big-beat songs that are anthemic in a genuine and stirring way, without ever sounding contrived.
  “I want to look into the heart of the dancer/ His movements have a magic mystery,” Clegg sang during the friendly-funk opener Heart of the Dancer. And a full house of devoted fans seemed to feel the same way as they spent the late-night set watching Clegg leap into animated Zulu pas de deux with backup singer Mandisa Dlanaga, who has been with him since 1986.
  Backing musicians Andy Innes (guitar), Barry Van Zyl (drums), Daniel Shout (keyboards and sax) and Trevor Donjeany (bass) ripped into the repertoire with the stealth precision of a commando unit, shifting with ease between the sweet chordal progression in the verses of Nyembezi to the song’s go-for-broke chorus. They sounded as happy to play the ska-inflected rhythm of Bullets For Bafazane as the almost Jethro Tull-style rock of the superb Third World Child.
  When Clegg whipped out the concertina for a rousing I Call Your Name, spitting out some lines a la mid-`60s Bob Dylan, the fans erupted. When he sang “I will have to say goodbye,” during the set closer Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, the crowd disagreed.
  Clegg came back out for an encore, finishing the night with a quite breathtaking Dela, turning the club into a sea of humanity clapping loudly in time with the steady backbeat. “I think I know why the dog howls at the moon,” Clegg sang.
  And as the clock struck midnight, some other magic mystery might have been wordlessly revealed.

  South African singer-songwriter and road warrior bandleader Johnny Clegg made what is becoming an annual pass through New York City this week, selling out two nights at the City Winery, despite the July 4 holiday. Clegg is aging well. He burst on the international scene in 1984 with the band Juluka and the Scatterlings album–a groundbreaking fusion of folk rock and Zulu maskanda. In one of many engaging raps in his current show, Clegg recalls merrily how, at that exact moment, so many around him were telling him that his music would go nowhere. The last laugh is sweet.

• ...Great venue (despite remote locale). People did manage to dance in the aisles.
  Everyone in the band seemed absolutely ON. Andy played extraordinarily well and, with these better seats, I could really appreciate what a critical component Dan Shout is. His solos were amazing and brought jazz to pieces I hadn't realized really needed it.
  Some oldies I haven't heard in years have been resurrected....
  Wild standing ovation with screams of love for Mandisa who, despite her usual shyness, looked very pleased....

• Wow! What a great show it was last night at the Sellersville Theater! The band sounded great and seemed to be happy in such a small venue. There really wasn't enough room for Johnny to do much dancing on stage, but he and the others did a great job of making do with what room there was. Adaptability. I forgot to ask him after the show if he had brought any dancers with him. .... I have been a fan of Johnny's since 1987.
  I was happy to hear some of the older songs which I don't believe I have heard him do in the last few concerts. We asked him after the show if he might do Warsaw 1943 again, and he said that another person had asked the same thing. So maybe! Anyone else love that song? As always, Johnny's comments in between the songs were fantastic.
  The band members were gracious enough to do some chatting after the show as Johnny got ready to do some signing. ...
  A fantastic, inspirational, and memorable show! Thank you, Johnny!

Track #4 is an infectious song called Chains. There are a number of superb instrumentals and guitar solos. The vocals are great too. Check it out.

It is called Serenading Ghosts and you can find it by searching for the album title on iTunes (if you seach for Dan Shout I couldn't find it and if you search for Shout there are too many results). • Simply sublime! Same set as Norfolk, CT.
  The band was very tight, Johnny sounded terrific, and Andy was off the charts fantastic. Another amazing show. When I first saw him in 2004, I thought, well this is a one-shot deal. Now, I've seen him 3x in the D.C. region, '04, '11, and 12. Who would have thought?!
  The venue, the newly refurbished Howard Theatre, was beautiful, but very odd for this kind of show. A dinner-theater setting, with table service. All Clegg concert virgins at my table.:-)
  I don't need table service. I need elbow room to dance and move!

• Agreed on the beauty of the theater and Andy's fantastic solos. In the past I've seen a few shows where Johnny seemed very tired but performed well anyway. Tonight everyone was very energetic and I enjoyed Johnny's digressions on culture, language and history in between the songs. It's not every act that can name drop Noam Chomsky!

Last year the Cedar Cultural Center was a perfect place to see them with a combination of seating and places to stand and dance near the bandstand. Based upon that experience we decided to go back there (from Atlanta). We were surprised and disappointed when we walked in and found folding chair seating packing fans in like sardines. A couple of spots in distant corners to stand and wiggle around so it was not a complete loss, plus most everyone was finally on their feet during the two- song encore so we ended up at our seats again stage front for the finale. Johnny seemed a little tired to me but in good form nonetheless. He mentioned the increase in folks at the Cedar between last and this year and it seemed like the work of the promoter they have hired to book venues. So lesson learned: as I am still part of the get and dance crowd it really pays to thoroughly check the venues out for each tour. Can't count that the configuration will be the same now that they have a promoter who wants to fill as many seats as possible. Good for the band, maybe not so good for dance oriented fans. ...

• I ... saw my first Johnny Clegg concert in Chicago on July 11th.  The show was GREAT!  It's amazing to me that you can see performers -- songwriters, dancers, musicians! -- of this caliber and influence at such a small place and for comparatively little money (I think the
  tickets were $25/each). .... We still got up and danced though.
  We've been listening to CDs, singing on our own, and turning to each other every once in a while and together doing a hand-claw dance (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it).
  Anyway, the set list for Chicago (and we were lucky enough to get the paper copy that Barry Van Zyl used), was the same as what was reported for the MN show the next night, though the order was slightly different, as Peter had suggested might be the case.  I'm listing the titles as shown on the sheet as that might be of interest to some as to how they refer to the songs:

I spoke to Andy Innes after the show last night. The gap in the tour is because they originally had some dates lined up in France during that time. The France dates fell through, and it was too late to get more dates in the US.
As for the location of the shows, after talking with Andy, my understanding of the way the process works is this. Their agent (Sue, I think he said) publicizes when the band is available. She then gets offers from from various cities (venues, promoters, etc I presume). As the offers come in a pattern for tour dates and locations becomes possible. I imagine it is a fairly complicated process to put it all together, but I think we can conclude that a series of offers from a range of cities in reasonable proximity to each other is needed to go to a certain area of the country. I'm sure she "works it", trying to fill in the gaps, but I think we can see that it's not as easy as "hey, come to LA, or Atlanta"

• The Roseburg show was so much fun. The Music On the Half Shell is a beautiful spot by the Umpqua river, and the concert was open to the public (passed the bucket for donations, but no ticket sales). By the time we showed up at 5:00 PM, the entire lawn was already covered with blankets reserving space. But we managed to squeeze into the front at the far left of the stage, a little blocked by the light towers, but nice and close. Too bad it turns out the dancing area was on the right of the stage! My favorite comment by Johnny was when he called Mandisa the Queen of the Johnny Clegg band. Mandisa looked really wonderful, and I enjoyed seeing her interact with the crowd. Everyone loved the show, and my mom's a Johnny Clegg fan now too. We picked up Andy's CD and listened a couple times on the way home...good stuff, I can't wait to hear it again.

• The concert last night in Bend was amazing. The concert itself was fantastic as always but things happened that I'd never seen before. 
  It was a warm summer evening next to the river in downtown Bend. The venue is new and kind of hard to find but a lot of people found it. The concerts were free so there were a lot of people who were there because of that. The opening act was a local trio. They were good but they played kind of New Agey music. People were laying around on the grass. When the host announced Johnny Clegg I cheered and other people who were sitting around me looked at me with a question mark. Before the first song was over, people were up on their feet dancing. It was like there was a ripple that went through the crowd. There was one guy with a SA flag up near the stage. There were some people there who knew the music but mostly it was people there for a free show. A couple sitting next to me asked if I knew who they were.  HA! Of course I told them. When the show was over I overheard some people and I asked some people what they thought and I think pretty much everyone was
  blown away. I talked to a man after the show. I asked him if he'd known of Johnny before tonight. He said he didn't. He said he'd heard OF him but never heard any of his music. He said you can just tell that JC was passionate about his music and what he was saying. Johnny did do a lot of talking last night. I always love his stories and he was in fine form last night. 
  The stage was small so dancing was limited. I tried taking some pictures but the sun was in the wrong place. I kept getting a glare and I couldn't tell what I was filming. I'll share if they come out at all. My favorite crowd moment was a little girl with down's syndrome dancing on the grass to Great Heart.

  It was hot, with the sun baring down on us. I stood in the back, next to the dancing elephant, who seemed to enjoy Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They performed a good set, but I was too excited for Johnny Clegg to really get into them. I loved that they performed "Shosoloza" as their final song. It's one of my favorite songs.
  While waiting for Johnny Clegg to come out on stage, a South African came up and asked me where in South Africa I was from. Ha! He saw my South Africa flag baseball cap. I told him that I wasn't, but vacationed there in 1994. We talked for a little while until Johnny snuck on stage and started singing. I didn't even hear him being announced. So, we parted company and I walked up to the front area by the stage to join the crowd that was dancing.
  Johnny did give a lot of lengthy introductions to his songs in the beginning, but a lot of people behind me were talking, so I was glad when he decided to just sing the songs so they could get in their entire show before 10 p.m.
  I love "Bullets for Bafazane" and am glad that he sings it in concert. It has such a fun melody. I was glad to hear three songs from his last album, but I wish he would include a few songs from "One Life", "New World Survivor", and "Crocodile Love" albums. "Africa Rising" would be a fantastic song to perform in concert and opening the show with "Into the Picture" would be great.
  He didn't do a full encore where he disappears from the stage for awhile as the audience applauds him back on stage. Everything was shortened, so I think the last two songs he performed, "Asimbonanga" and "Dela" were meant to be his encores.
  This is my 6th Johnny Clegg concert and the first I've seen him perform outside. He did say at the end of his concert: "See you sometime next year!" Is he serious about returning for another concert tour next year? I hope so. It was interesting to hear him perform at the Zoo. Too bad that it happened on the hottest day of the year. But, it was dark when he came on stage, so the temps began to cool off.
  I was able to buy a T-shirt that I wanted to get last year at the concert. I love his logos from the "Human" album.
  As I left the concert area in the long walk through the zoo, at one point, we heard some animals howling and someone commented, "even the animals don't want the concert to end!" I wonder how the animals like the loud music. I've never heard of a concert series at a zoo before I moved to Portland. Johnny Clegg had mentioned on stage something about how the kick drum affects the elephants, and how performing at a zoo brings up a whole set of challenges for the performer.
  I saw one lady wanting to give Johnny a piece of paper, but the stage was too high. Did anyone get to meet him backstage? I didn't go up to security to ask...since I've met him four times already. I was just grateful for a great show, even though a friend flaked out on me and I had to give my extra ticket to a stranger (they appreciated a free ticket).
  Mandisa was popular as ever. Every time she did her famous moves, the audience roared their approval. Her dynamic with Johnny is fantastic. I love moments like that.
• It was indeed very hot. Luckily, the breeze came up a little after sunset so it got better.
  The show was great! LBM did a wonderful set to open the show and Johnny & the band were as tight and energetic as ever. It seems that someone forgot to mention the zoo's strict curfew, so Johnny had to skip some of the song introductions and they were really rushing to get the whole set in. To their credit, the only song that was noticeably shortened was Asimbonanga, and even then they did a really good job with it.
  A significant portion of the audience left between acts, but hopefully some who stayed will find a new band to add to their collections.

  I picked up Dan's and Andy's cds in Portland, and my friend & I listened to them in the horrible traffic up I-5 to Seattle. It made what would have been a trying drive enjoyable.
  Although we got to the the show very late and a spot way back, it was a wonderful experience. Friend-now-new-fan & I got to chat a bit with Mandisa, Dan, and Andy, as well as a bit with Johnny after the Sandpoint show.
  The Sun Valley & Colorado fans are in for a big treat in the coming days!

  Yep, Seattle was a great show! While I really enjoyed it, my fears about the zoo venue turned out to be warranted. The zoo has no lights, so they always have a very strict curfew of 8:30, so the whole show has to take place during daylight (and in the heat, too, on this hottest day of the year in Seattle). I talked to Andy before the show and he said that they had run up against the curfew in Portland the night before, so they were very aware of the time constraints. In fact, they were told that they would be limited to a strict 75 minutes, so that meant they were cutting a couple songs from the setlist. I was really looking forward to Third World Child, as I’ve never heard it live, but it was dropped, along with Give Me the Wonder (based on the setlist posted for everywhere else). I’m glad Johnny still told a lot of stories, as I think that really pulls in a lot of the folks that aren’t so familiar with the music. As in Portland, there was no break before the encore. Johnny said goodbye during CCBW, but as the band started to exit the stage afterwards, Johnny stopped and got his guitar, the band turned around, and Johnny said something to the effect of, “We are running up against a time limit, so we’ll just go right into the last part of our set.” One really positive note was that the show was a sellout, which I think is somewhere over 3500 people, so I think that was a boost for the band, even if it meant we didn’t get the intimacy of all last year’s shows.
  The curfew meant that there would be no meeting the band or signing afterwards, so I’m really glad I decided to pick up Andy’s CD before the show. I asked the guy in the merch booth about the plan and he said they would have no time for the band to come out after, but he said he could probably get Andy to come say hi and sign my CD. At that moment, Dan Shout wondered out from the back and the guy turned to Dan and goes, “Go get Andy, he has a fan out here,” which just struck me as kind of funny, to make Dan do his bidding. Seconds later, Andy came out for a short chat. He was gracious as ever and I was happy to have the chance to say hello again. I’ve only had time to listen to half the CD so far, but it sounds great, so don’t pass up a chance to buy it at the remaining shows.

This year’s full line-up has been revealed and should have wide appeal with it offering genres like Jazz, Pop, Rock and everything in between.

With a career spanning 30+ years, Johnny Clegg, one of South Africa's most prolific musicians and performers will make his debut at The Teatro Theatre at Monte Casino on the 15 & 16 September 2012.
Johnny Clegg is currently touring America and is receiving rave reviews having recently sold out two nights in New York City.

These will be one of a few performances in Johannesburg before he leaves to go to perform for Prince Albert, The Sovereign Prince of Monaco and Princess Charlene in Monte Carlo at the end of September 2012.
This show at The Teatro is a brand new show which will include Dance, the Soweto Gospel Choir and stunning visuals which will compliment Johnny's hits throughout the years.
Johnny Clegg has sold more than five million albums worldwide. He has wowed audiences with his live shows, including performances with Nelson Mandela, and won a number of national and international awards for his music and for his outspoken views on apartheid and migrant workers in South Africa. He has released two dozen albums, the most recent of which is Human, in 2010.
Johnny Clegg is a dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight. Whilst all of these tags are fitting, none of them can accurately describe the energetic, passionate human being who has become one of South Africa's greatest musical exports. Clegg is an icon of South African music.
Recently awarded three honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, CUNY and University of the Witwatersrand, on Freedom day, the 27th of April 2012, Johnny Clegg received the presidential IKHAMANGA award as part of the National Orders ceremony. The National Orders are the highest honour a citizen can receive for his/her contribution to South Africa.
