2. Februar 2003 Nelson Mandela Benefit Concert Bunged Up

Business problems have caused the cancellation of an all-star AIDS awareness concert that was supposed to happen in South Africa next month.
The event was supposed to be hosted by Mandela, with special performers Bono, Queen, Coldplay, Ludacris and more at Cape Town’s Robben Island, the former apartheid jail where Mandela spent 18 years in prison.
According to Billboard.com, the problem is over money issues, which is pretty sad when you consider the intentions of the benefit. The Nelson Mandela Foundation cancelled the benefit this Friday (January 17) because its overseas producer had not arranged the proper broadcast rights or sponsorships. The concert was supposed to take place and be broadcast around the world on February 2 with all money raised going towards the Foundation, United Nations AIDS work and the Robben Island Museum.
The bill for the show was pretty damn impressive, sort of like an updated Live Aid. Artists including Macy Gray, Shaggy, Jimmy Cliff, Femi Kuti, Deborah Cox, Baaba Maal, Eve, Angelique Kidjo, Johnny Clegg, Nelly Furtado, Ms. Dynamite, Lamya, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Bongo Maffin, Vusi Mahlasela and Yusuf Islam (previously known as Cat Stevens) have all signed on. Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics was supposed to be the musical coordinator of the event. The concert was also supposed to feature the premiere of "48864," a Mandela tribute song written by Stewart, Bono and the late Joe Strummer.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is trying to re-schedule another concert in the future, but there’s no telling which artists slated to be at the cancelled show will re-schedule.

9. April 2003  Survivor Clegg releases new album

By Bokang Mohajane http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=9&click_id=5&art_id=vn20030409114609296C373515

Johnny Clegg, aka "the white Zulu", has always composed music that is truly reflective of life in South Africa, even during the apartheid years.
In the days of South Africa's difficult and complex political landscape, Clegg managed to navigate a path that allowed him to enter the hidden world of Zulu migrant labourers.
These men lived in hostels around Jo'burg, serving the city's insatiable appetite for cheap black labour. It was at this time that Clegg developed a reputation as a competent Zulu guitarist in the maskandi (from the Afrikaans "musikant") tradition.
In our recent conversation, I encountered a seasoned academic and well spoken communicator.
'It is an African rock album'
Clegg has won many prestigious awards and honours in the industry, and his new album, New World Survivor, will be launched on Sunday. The music addresses what he refers to as "promise betrayal".
"Before the turn of the 21st century, there was euphoria about the future. We were made to believe life would change for the better, but instead things have become even worse," he says.
Through his music he suggests possible ways and means of survival in the world in which we live.
New World Survivor has 11 tracks. Johnny speaks of the track Africa Rising, saying: "It symbolises voices of educated black youth, wanting to see a well-developed Africa."
He says all the songs on the album focus around suggestions on how one can survive - psychologically, intellectually, financially or otherwise.
'Technological home entertainment has reduced the social interaction between and among people'
Natural curiosity about how things can be done has been and still is his source of inspiration and motivation for writing and composing music. He believes for people to make it as performing artists, they first have to research their core talent.
"After finding this, one has to focus on their strengths and believe in their ability to make things happen," he says. Positive energy is important. "It gives people's talent voices, so they speak out."
He describes his new album as eclectic.
"It is an African rock album. As with my other albums, I have worked with my normal, regular band."
He believes worldwide the music industry is in crisis.
"In the past four years the industry across the board lost tremendous amounts of money because of significant power shifts in the business. In the past, record companies had all the say, but recently distributors have the power, and I believe this contributed hugely to losses within the industry.
"Technological home entertainment has reduced the social interaction between and among people, resulting in a particular kind of individualism. It is important for young people to interact. They need to strengthen their social muscles so they enhance possibilities for a truly united future nation."
The album launch is at Casalinga Restaurant, off Beyers Naude Drive, on Sunday, and booking is open at Computicket. Tickets are R175 general admission and R250 for golden circle, excluding service charges. Doors open at 2pm, and the show starts at 4.30pm.

The White Zulu reinvents his music as he survives changing times and adapts to a new world

South Africa's very own white Zulu has released a new album for "surviving the new world as he gets older".

Three decades and 19 albums later, Johnny Clegg has redefined his music and is doing so without Savuka or Juluka - the bands that have become synonymous with his name. New World Survivor, Clegg's new cross-over album, is a mix of "rock, pop and ballads".

Speaking to Metro at his home in Dunkeld, north of Joburg, Clegg - who has just turned 50 - spoke about getting older, surviving in the new world of information overload, digital revolution, and how the music industry has changed since the 1970s.

"As I get older I miss the passion for youth - the authenticity of people who really laugh. The passion we had as youth was intensified because life was simpler, without the information overload today's kids have to deal with.

"Children today get pounded by so much contradictory information that they battle to build a passionate relationship with the world," he said.

Clegg said when he entered the music industry in the 70s, live music was powerful because it was one of the only entertainment mediums around. Now the market is flooded with so many different forms of entertainment - from DVDs and home-theatre systems to Play-Stations and rave culture.

He will do 12 promotional shows in Gauteng this month before embarking on a tour in July and August performing in France, Germany, England and Australia.

The explosive dancer and evergreen vocalist will perform the cultural mix of sounds he has been exploring over the last 30 years - accompanied on stage by a 10-member band and backing vocals, starting on Tuesday at Caesars Casino, Gauteng.

This will be Clegg's first big show since his autobiographical An African Story performed last year during the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

"I feel that the South African music industry is in big trouble. It's hard for young musicians - they have to run their bands as a business. If they want to make it they have to play live and build up a fan base, and manage the band effectively," Clegg said.

Clegg has been involved with local young artists, has written songs for artists such as Danny K and composed the music for Jane Goodall's latest Imax movie, Wild Chimpanzees.

23. JUNI 2003 - An evening with Johnny Clegg

If you missed the fascinating retrospective account of Johnny Clegg's introduction to traditional Zulu dance and music last year in 'An African Story' staged at the Nelson Mandela Civic Theatre over the World Summit, Caesars Gauteng has bagged 12 exclusive performances from one of South Africa's most enduring musical legends.
Running from June 17th to June 28th at the Circus Maximus Theatre, Johnny Clegg of Jaluka and Savuka fame will take to the stage accompanied by a ten-member band and backing vocal cast. Clegg who has just released his fifteenth album entitled 'New World Survivor' promises a unique unplugged account of the bi-cultural sound he has spent over thirty years exploring.
"People are fascinated by the concept of a white boy who crossed over into tribal urban culture, who was dancing and stick fighting and playing guitar, who was seen in the shebeens and on the rooftops with migrant workers, playing maskande music.." recounted Johnny just before he staged his R1 million production of 'An African Story'. As a self-confessed storyteller from a very young age, a one time Anthropology lecturer and teacher of traditional African instruments, Clegg still feels compelled to communicate his experiences of the African culture he is submerged in with daily life.
In 1990, the French government bestowed its highest cultural accolade on Clegg for the unique way in which he articulated and communicated the culture and politics of South Africa through his music. This appreciation for Clegg's music from across the seas led to his affectionate Nome deplume 'Le Zoulou Blanc' being adopted by his own countrymen and even Jerry Springer in his debut episode of 'Saturday Night Live' recorded live at Caesars, where he introduced Clegg as 'The White Zulu'.
Clegg who has always composed music that is a true reflection of life in South Africa, even during the Apartheid years where a number of tracks were banned for trying to illuminate the consciousness of the public with his discoveries - returns to the theme of change on his latest album.
Although 'New world Survivor' is described as an eclectic compilation of the typical African rock sound we have become acquainted with over the decades, it also incorporates Kwaito and Zulu rap styles not explored before. The central thread is one of 'promise betrayal' where the lyrics express an open disillusionment with what the much anticipated future of South Africa has brought.
Live performance has always been the most important aspect of Johnny's musical career and with an impressive support band including Andy Innes on guitar, Brendan Ross on saxophone, Concord Nkabinde on bass guitar, Barry van Zyl on drums and Neil Gonsalves on keyboards - audiences can expect a truly intimate and inspiring performance that will take in some of the old favourites from Jaluka and Savuka as well as solo tunes from Clegg as they were originally written.
Adding to the magic of the African choral sound will be Johnny's troika of backing vocalists including Mandisa Dlanga, who has been with Johnny for over fifteen years, Bongani Masuku who has sung with Simply Red and featured on Disney's 'The Lion King' soundtrack as well as Sipho Nxumalo, a contributor for Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Simply Red in the past
An Evening with Johnny Clegg will be running 8 shows only. The show will run from Tuesday, 17th June to Saturday 28th June at the Circus Maximus Theatre at Caesars Gauteng, from Thursdays to Saturdays at 20h30 and Sundays at 15h00. Ticket prices vary from R125 and R135. Get your ticket from Computicket today and be a part of this exclusive evening of entertainment with one of South Africa's most well-loved musicians. Johnny Clegg diesmal solo? Nun ja...
http://members.aol.com/hgkrumm/jc_140703.html

September - LUNCH FOR FIVE WITH SOUTH AFRICA'S WHITE ZULU - JOHNNY CLEGG

Celebrity Charity Auction

Johnny Clegg is an icon of South African music, art and culture. Born in England in the 1950's his family soon moved to Africa where he grew up first in Zimbabwe and Zambia, and later in South Africa. A chance encounter with a Zulu street guitarist led him to Zulu culture. He became so caught up in the culture and it's music that he was eventually made an adopted son of a Zulu chief. In the early 1970s Clegg teamed up with Sipho Mchunu and as Juluka they made history as they bucked the strict apartheid government by becoming the first mixed-race band to play together on stage.

Here is your once in a lifetime opportunity to have lunch with the one and only Johnny Clegg. A mutually agreed upon date will be coordinated to reserve this special luncheon some time between 29 September and 15 December 2003. This auction item is available until midnight Tuesday, 23 September. Bids will be accepted in increments of R100.

H2Q Events & Promotions brings South Africa’s most successful artist in its history to perform in Dubai on Friday, October 3rd, 2003. The live concert will be held at Le Meridien, Mina Seyahi.
In the early 1970s Clegg teamed up with Sipho Mchunu and formed the band “Juluka”. They made history by bucking the strict apartheid government and becoming the first mixed-race band to play together on stage. Juluka's sound melded the predominant Zulu sound with the Celtic callings from Clegg's origins. With Juluka splitting in 1985, Johnny went on to form another crossover band “SAVUKA” which means, “We have risen”. With their incredibly infectious dance music, the band toured Europe extensively and soon developed a strong fan base, which began to be translated into album sales. By the end of 1987, Savuka was the leading world music group touring the francophone countries.
Greater success lay waiting in the phenomenal record sales that began to consolidate in 1988. By the end of 1989, Savuka had sold over 1 million units of their debut album and their second album was reaching 700,000 units. In an incredible moment on the album and singles charts, Johnny Clegg held the #1 and #2 position on the album charts with the 1st and 2nd album at the same time, and on the singles charts held the #1 and #7 position with his singles “Asimbonanga” and “Scatterlings of Africa”. This was a momentous achievement for the group out of South Africa and in 1990 they received the “Victoires” award from the French recording industry for the biggest selling international artists over two years. They also received in that year the world music award for the biggest selling world music group internationally. Their fourth album was nominated for a Grammy Award for the best world music album in 1993.
As for the latest news, in July 2003, Johnny Clegg embarked on a very successful tour of France and Germany. At one festival north of Paris, Johnny Clegg played to 60,000 people, breaking all previous attendance records for a concert. “This goes to prove that Johnny Clegg’s music transcends all boundaries and will appeal not only to South Africans, but other nationalities as well,” said Quentin Greyling.
Currently, Johnny Clegg has been commissioned to create the theme song for the South African Rugby team for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The concert in Dubai promises to be eclectic and exciting and will provide a flavor of South African music at its best.

Johnny Clegg at a press meet ©Gulf News
Johnny Clegg, the white Zulu, master of the Maskande sound, will take stage at the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi tonight and conjure up the magic that has captivated cross-cultural audiences for nearly three decades.
Clegg and his band will be performing for the first time in the Middle East. "I have read that Dubai is a cosmopolitan place where various cultures live in harmony in a modern backdrop. We will make our contribution to the cacophony of voices," he told a press conference yesterday.
He promises a one-and-a-half hour set, reflecting a spectacular musical journey that began with Maskande – the sound of 'hip' Zulus, Clegg says with a smile – a fusion of traditional and contemporary rhythms.
"But I have been exposed to Arabic music as well. We were doing well in France in the mid 1980s and I was introduced to Rai music. I performed with Cheb Khaled who had this huge hit Didi. I sang a verse in Zulu and he incorporated that version in an album later.
"The set in Dubai will feature some songs from the new album I'm working on which has hip-hop influences. It has strains of the new wave sound and bass lines."
Born in Manchester, the South African who is a Zulu at heart, was mystified by Maskande as a teenager in the late 1960s after meeting Charlie Mzila, a cleaner, and Sipho Mchunu, a gardener.
The ugly face of apartheid was plastered on every signboard on every street. A white boy learning Bhaca dancing and finger picking the guitar, Maskande style, was unimaginable. At age 15 he was arrested for his passion for a Zulu way of life.
As a student of anthropology and a teacher later, Clegg had grown up with this "fence", as he terms apartheid. "At first, I wanted to see gaps in the fence and reach the other side, my magical world of Zulu dancing and singing. And then, I wanted to break the fence down."
Music, Clegg says, is a powerful form of communication. "When you go to a live show, it is a pure form of communication." And Dubai and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi will provide that perfect setting for a Johnny Clegg gig: a cross-cultural audience, a golden beach and a tranquil sea. That should bring out the best in the Zulu.

17 November 2003 - Johnny Clegg launches Live DVD http://www.samusic.co.za/sam/content.asp?ContentKey=945

On 17 November 2003 music legend and popular icon Johnny Clegg released a DVD collection encompassing the songs, sweat and success of the extraordinary career of an exceptional man through indie label Rhythm Safari.
In the early Eighties, despite threats, harassment, and media blackout, Johnny and Sipho Mchunu, as Juluka, had become too popular and relevant to be ignored. Cult curiosity became mainstream exposure, and international acclaim followed quickly. Since those trailblazing days Juluka, and later Savuka, have accrued massive album sales worldwide, and been showered with musical and humanitarian honors. They have also provided some of the most memorable onstage performances ever seen, both locally and internationally.
These indelible images of this internationally acclaimed artist, through which we can chart the rebirth of a nation, have been compiled on an irresistible DVD collection. This will be the most important local music event for some time, and an automatic inclusion in many music collections.
All of Johnny's hits from 1983 to 2001 are featured in this package, including these unmissable classics:
Impi, once seen as treasonous for it's celebration of a famous African victory over White colonialism, now bellowed lustily by the nation before Springbok rugby tests, this song has become an alternative national anthem.
Asimbonanga, a number one hit abroad which stretched the Apartheid government's patience to the limit by mourning Steve Biko's death and calling for Nelson Mandela's release.
Scatterlings of Africa, an international hit that perfectly enunciated the sense of dislocation, alienation and being in exile at home, which reasonable people felt increasingly in the Eighties.
And many more favorites, including Cruel Crazy Beautiful World (written for his son), Third World Child, Great Heart, I Call Your Name and The Crossing, amongst many others.
Along with these iconic tracks the set is enhanced by an interview with Johnny, all lyrics, special bonus tracks, and unique moments of on-stage magic. Juluka's vibrant, seditious set at the 1985 Concert in the Park, and emotional stage appearance of Nelson Mandela for a performance of `Asimbonanga' in Frankfurt are but two of many highlights. The package is mixed in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, complemented by high-end design, and represents genuine value for both serious aficionados and mass-market consumers.

The main feature of the DVD is from a concert in Paris at the Zenith in 1990. 68 minutes of sheer heaven with an amazing crowd. I think some of this was posted a while back but here's the rest of the DVD:
There are two old Juluka concert clips (Capetown, 1983) with some editing of staged material into the concert video: Impi and Umbaqanga Music.
There is the 1999 performance of Asimbonanga in Frankfurt where Mandisa brings Nelson Mandela comes out on stage. This gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
There is a very raw and amazing Juluka Percussion/Dance called Mantombana Dance-Concert in the Park that is grainy and must be about the same age as the Capetown clips (1983). Does anyone know where this is from?
There is an 11 minute interview with Johnny including some Clegg home video of Sipho teaching Johnny how to stick fight and a chat with Johnny's mother.
The only concert clip that probably is similar to how they perform now (I'm only guessing since I haven't seen them perform since 1990) is Giyani, acoustic in Thailand in 2001.
There are 4 Juluka music videos (Scatterlings, December African Rain, Kilimanjaro, Fever) and 8 Savuka music videos (Great Heart, Third World Child, I Call Your Name, These Days, The Crossing, In My African Dream, When the System Has Fallen, Tough Enoug). (I have heard about a 1994 PAL video tape with 13 companion videos to In My African Dream and wonder if most of these videos came from this tape--does anyone know?). Also, I never watch MTV, but a friend claims he has seen some Clegg music videos on MTV maybe 10 years ago. Has anyone ever seen a Clegg music video on MTV?
Oh yes, and they give lyrics on screen to all the songs on the DVD. But no liner notes and no easter eggs :

Never mind that it took us an hour of queuing to get in. Never mind that it took an hour-and-a-half to drive from Green Point to Mowbray at the end of it all. Never mind that the sound was really crap at the rear end of the stadium behind the halfway line, way behind where the celebs in the Golden Circle were rattling their jewellery at the ageing rock stars on stage.
Never mind that the vision mixing on the in-house big screen video was appalling and that some large lager lout had to be restrained by us when he started screaming abuse at Baaba Maal. Never mind that the beer tent ran out of beer way before the end of the concert and that Beyonce and her dancers looked like lap dancers trying to convince people to condomise.
Never mind it all. Saturday night's 46664 concert was extraordinary. If you weren't there, you weren't there, and I feel sorry for you.
There were several defining moments in a night of definitive moments. First off, there were some 45 000 of us Capetonians and a bunch of rock stars being beamed to a global audience of between two and eight billion, depending on whom you believe. That is so way cool.
Then there was Madiba. When he shuffled onto the stage, the stadium went wild. He stamped his authority on the battle against Aids in a way that no politician in South Africa has done before. He threw down the gauntlet to Thabo Mbeki and Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and basically said: "Act now and act fast, the time for talk is over."
Then there was Johnny Clegg. The crowd went equally wild when the white Zulu walked onto the stage. Johnny made the most important speech in a night of platitudes. He quietly lambasted the government for its failure to act on the Aids pandemic and then raised his fist and said "viva Zackie Achmat, viva." The crowd went wild again.
There were other Cape Town moments: the Coca-Cola seller who walked past us in the middle of Baaba Maal's set and said "Jissus, what language is that ou singing in", almost as much of a Cape Town moment as the Bergie who said "Athens se ma se p**s" when we didn't get the Olympics.
Then there was the Rasta whose name I forget who sang a song wearing a Springbok rugby scarf draped around his neck. Sublime.
Talking of sublime, Sir Bob Geldof shambled onto stage after Beyonce and said something (I didn't have a pen and notebook) along the lines of : "Talk about from the sublime to the ridiculous, I'm not blonde, I don't have tits and I can't sing."
For me, the defining musical moments of the night were threefold. The first was when Peter Gabriel stood up to sing his anthemic song Biko, prefaced by his saying that he felt privileged to sing the song for the first time in South Africa. All I could do was stand there with my fist in the air. Around me people were weeping.
I was too.
Then the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens sang Wild World with Peter Gabriel on backing vocals. He was almost drowned out by the crowd shouting the words back at him. This was his first live concert in decades, and I wish him many more. We love you, Yussuf.
And then the song of the night: Youssou N'Dour singing Seven
Seconds, with Annie Lennox taking the place of Neneh Cherry on back-up vocals - you had to have been there, it was beyond spiritual.
I almost forgot to mention that the extraordinary line-up of musicians included The Corrs (who were awesome), the Eurythmics (who were awesome), Angelique Kidjo (we are not worthy), Baaba Maal (who was awesome), Bono and Edge (who were awesome), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (who were awesome), Beyonce and Anastacia (who were awesome), Jimmy Cliff (who was awesome), Johnny Clegg (who was beyond awesome), Yvonne Chaka Chaka (who was brilliantly awesome), Amapondo (who got lost a bit), Danny K (huh?) and a whole bunch of people whose names I've forgotten like Queen minus Freddie Mercury (who died of Aids) who still did a damn fine job on a reworked version of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Like I said. If you weren't there, you weren't there (and the only reason I got from Green Point to Mowbray in an hour and a half was that some kind of presidential cavalcade of vehicles came screaming through the traffic with lights flashing and sirens wailing as we sat in an impenetrable wall of vehicles, and I reckoned that the Land Rover could easily pass as an official vehicle so I tucked in behind them and sped through the last two kilometres of traffic jam at high speed. My apologies to anybody I offended, but at least I got home before 3am.)
And now, as I write this, it is 3am. I am still trying to digest the import of this concert. My sense is that this is a turning point in the battle against HIV/Aids in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela has given what is perhaps the most torturedly precious piece of his identity, his prison number 46664, to the battle against Aids.
Madiba has made a potent statement, the world's most revered rock stars have come to South Africa to make their stand, 45 000 Capetonians made their stand clear on Saturday night.
That is the message that has been lost as the tabloid end of our media has become enraptured by the stars in our midst - this was not an event about celebrities, this was an event about HIV/Aids, an event about the silent killer that affects us all.
Thank you, Madiba. And thanks, Bono and Bob and Beyonce and everyone else. You are way cool.
