Iconic Johnny Clegg, unplugged at Emperors Palace in February 2014
Johnny Clegg, one of South Africa’s most prolific musicians, will return to Emperors Palace for two shows only on 7 and 9 February 2014. Clegg, who is no stranger to the superb Theatre of Marcellus, will delight fans with a rare, unplugged performance.
This very intimate show will include storytelling by Clegg, where he will share details about his life and personal views of the political history of South Africa and abroad. The show is a personal journey, which is uplifting, moving and also humorous at times.
With more than 7 million albums sold worldwide, Clegg has wowed audiences through his live performances, including performances with Nelson Mandela. The singer songwriter has not only won a number of national awards, but also international awards for his music and outspoken views about apartheid and migrant workers in the country.
A dancer, anthropologist, academic, activist and French knight, Clegg has released two dozen albums, including the most recent album, Human, in 2010. Whilst all of these tags are fitting, none of them can accurately describe the energetic, passionate artist who has become one of South Africa's greatest musical exports.
Recently awarded three honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, CUNY and the University of the Witwatersrand, on Freedom day in 2012 Clegg received the presidential IKHAMANGA Award as part of the National Orders ceremony. The National Orders are the highest honour a South African citizen can receive for his/her contribution to South Africa.
The shows will be performed at 20h30 in the Theatre of Marcellus on 7 and 9 February 2014. Tickets start from R200(-R290) per person and can be booked through www.emperorspalace.com or on 011 928 1297/1213. Special show, stay and play packages are available.

Hello, my name is Mike, a long time lurker to the list and
a Clegg fan since the 90's when I first heard his music while living in Port
Harcourt, Nigeria. Saw him in Chico, CA about 10 years ago but recently
attended the shows in Ft Worth & Austin. Great performances. Ladysmith Black
Mambazo played the first half at Ft Worth (didn't play with Johnny) and
Johnny played 2 shows in Austin so the sets were a little brief. I'm an old
time film photographer but brought a new to me Nokia 1020 phone to the
shows. ..... Great seats, first & second rows. Johnny came out to meet fans
at Ft Worth but not in Austin....

Johnny told a couple of good stories between songs. The venue was great, as
was the sound, and the whole show. It was an interesting crowd, but I don't
think the show was sold out. Wingate University is a good distance from
Charlotte, NC.
They were selling the new live CD, which is great, plus 2 other Johnny Clegg
albums....
Also, Jesse Clegg was the opening act, with Andy Innes accompanying him.
Jesse's voice has quite the range and he put on a good show.

Of course, great stories prior to each song. I especially liked the one
prior to “Your Time Will Come”, as he compared the rise and fall (years and
figurative) to Mandela’s imprisonment (years and figurative)......When
Johnny asked late in the concert, “who is from South Africa”, a couple
hundred hands went up. Auditorium didn’t have much room to dance, but
everyone was on their feet for the last six songs. Sound was very good.
Great to be among so many people singing along to his songs....

...What a fantastic show at the Somerville Theater two
nights ago. Had great seats thanks to early warning from this list, and
early connection to tickets from my friend who is a member of Crash Arts.
The set list was the same as Ridgefield. The energy was high.
One thing I noticed was that Johnny is adding new details to his stories.
When he was telling the story of Bafazane starting out as the bands road
manager, he added detail that Bafazane was a master maker of car tire
sandals. Before the Crossing, he spoke more about his dancing relationship
with Dudu than I have ever heard before. In fact, he didn't even speak about
what the Zulu belief of the time of the crossing after someone dies. Very
nice to get more of the whole picture over the years!
Enjoy the rest of the tour, people!...

Johnny Clegg w/Jesse Clegg - 4/8
Johnny Clegg - dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight. Whilst all of these tags are fitting, none of them can accurately describe the energetic, passionate human being who has become one of South Africa's greatest musical exports. He has campaigned against the injustice of apartheid South Africa and been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map as a cultural ambassador. More info on Johnny's life and achievements is available here.
Recently awarded three honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, CUNY and University of the Witwatersrand, Johnny, a former Grammy nominee and Billboard music award winner, still tours regularly, both at home and abroad, with dates pegged for 2012 in Europe and north America. Be sure not to miss his dynamic live act should it come your way.
Johnny Clegg took his highly acclaimed A SOUTH AFRICAN STORY to the Royal Albert Hall in March this year and had the entire audience up on their feet. Fans from all over London, South Africans and Londoners alike, attended the show at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall where Johnny Clegg made his debut performance as a solo artist. He is now bringing this show home to The Teatro at Monte Casino from the 29 November 2013 to Sunday 1 December 2013. This story covers Johnny's life through his music, and is an inspiring and uplifting voyage. The show is his stories of his life and how various local and international history influenced his music.
The show will showcase various forms of dance that influenced him and is supported by visuals that have not been seen before from Johnny's archives as well as state of the art lighting, sound and projection. This production will include some of Johnny Clegg's hits, special guest artists as well as some intimate unplugged moments.
Audiences will experience the thrill of music and dance with this South African icon as he links his music to the journey South Africa has taken over the past 30 years.
During this time Clegg has become one of South Africa's most famous exports while retaining his popularity in his home country. Aside from his musical success, he is widely recognised and respected as an anthropologist, academic and activist. Clegg also campaigned against the injustice of apartheid South Africa and has been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map.
His energetic and passionate persona, together with his anthemic hits, has made Clegg an outstanding musical ambassador for his country. By combining African music structures with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds, Clegg pioneered a new and unique sound. From Europe to the States, from Australia to Potchefstroom and London, audiences in sold out venues have danced to "Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World", "Scatterlings of Africa", "I Call Your Name", "Impi", "Asimbonanga", "Great Heart", and "African Sky Blue".
Last year Clegg was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga for his excellent contribution and achievement in the field of bridging African traditional music with other music forms, promoting racial understanding among racially divided groups in South Africa under difficult apartheid conditions, working for a non-racial society and being an outstanding spokesperson for the release of political prisoners.

We had a great time at the Portland show. .... Yes, we
were initially disappointed seeing chairs in the dance floor, but they let
us dance in the aisles and we had a great time, so I quickly got over it. It
makes sense with the crowd, they had to add seating and it was great to see
a packed house. It was really hot in the venue, so the balcony, being the
hottest, was the only area not filled. The crowd was really supportive, in
fact, almost everyone was standing for much of the show. The only part that
really bummed me out was when it was over...if only they could play all
night! :)
The band sounded great. It was fun to hear some songs I didn't expect, some
I hadn't heard them play in a while, and many of my favorites like Spirit is
the Journey and Circle of Light. The acapella version of Wanderers (Digging
for Some Words) was really awesome and got a great reaction from the crowd.
I think the set-list was the same as Jeff posted at the Triple Door.
The story-telling was great, with variations I had not heard before. Johnny
danced but didn't do the high kicks, jumps and spins. It was a little hard
to hear Mandisa unfortunately, but she definitely stood out on Asimbonanga.
It was fun to see Brendan Ross back in the band, we picked up his CD and
Jesse's, of course! We managed to pick up the last copy of the live acoustic
CD, and they said they'd be getting more. They also had Barry's Hadeda CD,
Mandisa's CD, mugs, photos, hats, T-shirts and tank tops.
I am always amazed how friendly Johnny and the band are with the fans...
Johnny's comment, as usual, was "the twins again!". As usual, I could only
mumble my humble appreciation for how much joy the music has brought to my
life. Sadly, I didn't get to chat with Andy Innes, or I would have told him
how much I enjoyed his set with Jesse Clegg, and how much I enjoy his album.
I hope they come back again soon, did anybody hear if they have more tours
planned?

I was with a group of 5, including Seattle scatterling
Jeff, at the Berkeley show last night. It was at the Freight & Salvage, a
great small "folk music" venue. Like many of the other venues, there was no
specific dance floor, but people were dancing in the aisles. The show was
sold out in advance, and there was a long line waiting to get in when we got
there so our seats were not right in front, but still very nice. The stage
there is very small, but Johnny still cleared things out of the way to
demonstrate some Zulu war dancing techniques, and he and Manrisa did some
small area dancing.
The show was great (of course!), and like Jamie in Portland, I also very
much liked Jesse's acoustic set with Andy. The interplay of the two guitars
was really nice and it's great to be able to see and hear Andy's virtuosity.
I bought the "Life on Mars" CD, knowing it is Rock & Roll and won't sound
quite the same, but I'm still looking forward to it... It was also nice to
see Jesse join the group after the encore for a final bow and see Johnny and
Jesse walk off together.
After the show, thanks to Jeff, our little group talked to Barry, Andy &
Brendan, and got a set list (I think from Brendan), and met Johnny, Jesse &
Manrisa at the autograph/photo table. Considering what great musicians they
all are, how great the music is, their contributions to social reform &
social justice, their popularity in Africa, etc., they are all so incredibly
friendly and nice. And to get to see them up close in small venues is really
an amazing & appreciated treat!
The set list we got from the band is, I think, the same as for the Portland
show. Here's how they wrote it: 1. WARSAW, 2. I CALL YOUR NAME, 3. TAKE
MY HEART AWAY, 4. GIYANI, 5. SPIRIT IS THE JOURNEY, 6. SHADILE, 7. MALONJENI,
8. AFRICA, 9. DIGGING FOR SOME WORDS, 10. CIRCLE OF LIGHT, 11. THE CROSSING,
12. TUFF ENUFF, 13. GREAT HEART, 14. SCATTERLINGS, 15. CRUEL CRAZY, -------,
16. ASIMBONANAGA, 17. DELA
One final note: we asked Andy, Brendan and the nice woman at the merchandise
booth if they had a favorite venue on their tour. The general feeling was
that a lot of it was a blur (especially with this show being their 6th in 6
nights), but that they liked the "Beer Garden" (maybe I have the name wrong)
venues in Chicago & New York, and that of the recent venues they seemed to
all have liked Grass Valley. Our little group has already started early
planning for getting out there during the next tour.

....I felt the venue encouraged Johnny (that and the
election results that he referenced at the end). His encores, especially
Dela, and his little reprise of it, were electrified (he finished, dashed
off the stage and the lights went down, he then dashed back on, the lights
went up, and he proceeded to high-five everyone in the front row and point
directly into a guy's cellphone camera, singing "I burn for you sir!"). He
seemed to love the loose, milling crowd, dancing and singing along with him,
right at his feet.
I loved that he played older songs as well. I never thought I would hear
"Spirit is the Journey" live...

10.05 Thousand Oaks, CA www.ptgo.org
OK - after enjoying 4 shows (Saratoga, Berkeley, Solano
Beach and Thousand Oaks) I've decided there's just no rhyme or reason to the
sitting/standing thing at all...in fact, watching people, both staff and
audience, became a big part of the fun for me, there was no anticipating how
it was going to come down.
The only venue in California Johnny repeated on this tour was the Belly Up
in Solano Beach - so can one assume he doesn't hate it? Yet, after all the
discussion of formal concert venues vs more relaxed settings, this was the
most relaxed (it's a bar). Nearly everyone was standing, and it was roaring
crowd noise throughout the entire show, it was the only venue I saw where
people didn't observe respectful silence during the stories. Folks at the
back kept screaming "we can't hear you!" when Johnny was trying to tell
stories, others screamed back "then shut UP!" He tried to talk louder the
first time, but after that, just said he was doing the best he could
(implying, I'm guessing, that if they wanted to hear they could STFU...)
This show had far and away the most South Africans in attendance of any of
the 4 I saw, that was fun, I met some really lovely folks.
In contrast, the Thousand Oaks show was a little weird. I was delighted to
be there (I'll listen to Johnny under just about any circumstances...) and
it was truly sweet to be there for the last show of the tour, and Johnny
proved once again that he can bring the magic to any venue. But once again
it seemed like the venue booked an act they didn't understand, and suffered
confusing results.
The place is a beautiful huge concert hall, but they blocked off the balcony
and had just a few folks in the mezzanine so it felt weirdly half empty (odd
after all the previous totally sold out shows at smaller venues) It was the
sort of place you'd think would have a terrific sound system but from where
I was sitting in the 2nd row, there was a full second delay echo from the
back of the hall that was totally annoying.
I'd danced a little too hard at the Belly Up and my knee was swollen, making
sitting difficult, so I was quietly standing in the aisle, until a tenacious
little rat-dog of an usher demanded I sit down, insisting NO one could stand
ANYWHERE.
I knew the next song was Scatterlings and the whole place would erupt. I
walked past her a bit later, surrounded by masses of dancing people, looking
upset and bewildered. I just smiled at her - she glared back (somehow I
think she decided this craziness was all MY fault...lol!)
But seems to me perhaps the venue might possibly educate their staff?
Earlier that same evening, the same usher was guarding the entrance doors,
when Andy Innes came outside with friends, and then found he couldn't get
back in. She finally directed him to another entrance - and still continued
to stare after him suspiciously muttering about "security"; - till I leaned
over and said, "That's the guitar player for the band performing here
tonight, he's supposed to be back stage". She still didn't look convinced...
...I took my 2004 Scatterlings sweatshirt and Johnny and Jesse were both
kind enough to sign it. (Not sure that was my best idea - I love that
sweatshirt and now I want to hang it on the wall instead of wearing it....lol!)
And best....oh, by far, the very, very best....Barry gave me a pair of
drumsticks! I damn near swooned in delight.

Tribute to South African Music Heroes Concert 2014 - Moretele Park Tribute Concert
Come and celebrate spring and the country’s 20 years of Democracy with a star-studded procession of South African music royalty at the annual Tribute Concert, taking place at Moretele Park on Saturday, 30 August 2014, Mamelodi in Pretoria.
The City of Tshwane once again plays Proud Host to this ever-popular concert, now in its 17th year, which is renowned as one of the premier events on the country’s music calendar.
The line-up for this year’s special-edition Moretele Park Tribute Concert, which pays homage to our Democracy and its musical Heroes and Icons, reads like a who’s who of the local music industry. Organisers Drakensberg Promotions have assembled a parade of exceptional artists that will head to Mamelodi for a daylong party pulsing with jazz, pop, traditional and dance music.
Headlining the 2014 event are Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo, the comeback kids who recently collected two MTV Africa Music Awards to add to the eight South African Music Awards they won at this year’s ceremony.
Plus, sensational dance maestros Mi Casa will be getting the crowd up on their feet with their essential and uplifting house grooves.
The one and only Johnny Clegg – our very own Le Zulu Blanc, a true living legend who has been fêted as a French Knight of Arts and Letters and who received the Order of Ikhamanga back home – will also be performing on the day.
He will be joined by fellow music veterans Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Letta Mbulu, Jonas Gwangwa, Thomas Chauke and Ringo. The younger generation of dazzling musicians is well represented by Lira, Bhudaza, Musa (last year’s Idols winner) and Zonke – all adding up to an unmissable music encounter par excellence.
Emerging jazz artists and groups will also perform on the day, which pays homage to South Africa’s music luminaries while showcasing the next generation of bubbling-under talent.
“We are immensely proud that the Moretele Park Tribute Concert is now widely regarded as being the hottest springtime party in the country,” says Leonard Sithole of Drakensberg Promotions.
“This year’s event is a particularly special occasion for us, because it gives us the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a country in the two decades since the dawn of democracy – but also to celebrate our musical riches, from our evergreen stalwarts right through to our talented young upstarts.”
Join the thousands of revelers at Moretele Park Tribute Concert in Mamelodi, at one of the year’s most festive parties! The entertainment starts at 11am, and continues into the night. Tickets cost R300 and are available at Computicket.
