Johnny Clegg The Final Journey....last tour
Tue Apr 25, 2017
From RealConcerts email:
Johnny Clegg embarks on The Final Journey World Tour
Nearly forty years after he began one of music's most remarkable careers, Johnny Clegg is embarking on his Final World Tour, titled The Final Journey.
Johnny Clegg was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and underwent chemotherapy treatment. Throughout the treatment he continued to tour locally and internationally undertaking a nine week tour of USA and CANADA in 2016. Johnny is currently finishing a new album and his autobiography. As he is in remission, Johnny has decided to use this opportunity to perform a final set of concerts in SA and overseas to thank his fans for their support over the 35 year long journey that spans his career.
Through his bands Juluka and Savuka, Clegg pioneered a uniquely South African hybrid music during a time of cultural and racial segregation. His music always offered a vision of how South Africans could find each other and the possibilities of a non-racial future. For this reason, the South African leg of the tour has tremendous import for him as it was South Africa and all South Africans that shaped him as an artist.
The iconic South African artist will start this live journey on July 1st with one show only at Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town. The tour will then move to the Teatro at Montecasino for two Johannesburg shows on July 7th and July 8th, before Durban audiences get the opportunity to see Clegg live, with a show at the Durban ICC Arena on July 29th.
Following these four South African dates, Clegg will begin the international leg of the tour, starting with shows at the Eventim Apollo in London on August 19th and a show at the Dubai Opera House on September 20th.
The tour will be built around Clegg's unparalleled repertoire of songs which began with the release of Juluka's Universal Men in 1979 and continued through the Savuka years and his more recent solo work.
Clegg's many different hits and live favourites will be brought to life by the biggest production ever created for a Clegg live show, supported by his world-class live band. A highlight of the shows will be the different styles of dance that have been integral to Clegg's life and work, ever since he learnt the fundamentals of Zulu music and traditional Zulu Inhlangwinini dancing with Charlie Mzila while still a teenager. Guest artists include the Soweto Gospel Choir.
As the tour unfolds, there will be some special surprises lined up for the audiences.
Johnny Clegg said "This will be my final set of public performances for my fans in SA and around the world. I am immensely excited to be able to bring to them an autobiographical, audio-visual and intimate account of my life through my music and The Dance. "
"Johnny Clegg is more than just one of this country's finest musicians and entertainers. He is a national treasure who has brought together all South Africans and reminded us of what makes us great as a country." says Cyril Ramaphosa.
"Johnny is taking time off to write his autobiography and spend time with his family and do the things he hasn't been able to do due to an incredible work schedule", said long time Johnny Clegg manager and promoter Roddy Quin. "It's been a privilege to have travelled such a long journey with Johnny and an honour to have worked and shared so many incredible experiences with him. It has truly been inspiring. And so we are excited to present The Final Journey with 4 incredible shows in SA in July and the tour, which will stretch across the world over the next few months. Johnny will still continue writing, recording and will partake in a few private engagements."
Johnny Clegg: The Final Journey World Tour represents the peak of a career that has combined near matchless music success with sustained - and significant - social, political and cultural impact.
Clegg's recorded output as part of Juluka, Savuka and solo has earned him millions of record sales, countless awards and nominations (including a Grammy nomination) and multiple international releases, all eagerly consumed by a truly global audience. He was the forerunner of combining Western musical styles with African ones, sparking a revolution in South African music that can be still be heard in the work of artists today.
Most potently, Clegg's ability to illuminate the connectedness of all human beings through his music meant he was a pioneer of social cohesion in South Africa. He also provided a portal for international audiences to gain a deeper understanding of the anti-apartheid movement and the journey towards, and ultimately into, freedom. For this, Clegg has received many different honours including an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire), the South African Order of Ikhamanga and the French Chevalier des Arts et Lettres (Knight of Arts and Letters) , as well as several honorary doctorates.
Booking for the South African dates of Johnny Clegg's Final Journey World Tour open on April 25th. Tickets for this unmissable event are expected to sell out fast as fans ensure they don't miss this South African on his Final World Tour.
Additional South African and international dates are set to be added later in the year for what promises to be the most powerfully emotional live shows of a truly singular South African – a dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, and activist like no other.

The first stop on Johnny's Final Tour was the Grand West Arena in Cape Town. His first announced concert was July 1, 2017. Surprise guests were Sipho Mchunu (his Juluka partner from the early days), his son Jesse (with whom this was the FIRST time for the two of them to play together). Mandisa Dlanga was there too (she had opted out of the last tour). There was fantastic dancing, and great visuals. The 5000 seat arena was filled, with dancing in the aisles and the front finally overwhelming the ushers. There are brief glimpses of some of the astounding variety of performance along with a couple of complete songs.

02.10.217 Johnny Clegg signs global deal for new album
Johnny Clegg announced his global signing with Universal Music South Africa to release his brand new upcoming album, “King Of Time.”
The album is due for release towards the later part of 2017, and includes songs that tell a story and a reflection of his life.
“I am very excited to sign a global deal with Universal Music Group, with their enthusiasm and electric energy it felt like the right fit to release my brand-new album, ‘King of Time’,” says Johnny Clegg.
Earlier this year Clegg announced a final set of concerts worldwide, with shows selling out within hours. The purpose of The Final Journey Tour was to thank his fans for their support over his 40-year-long career.
Johnny Clegg has an unparalleled repertoire of songs which began with the release of Juluka’s Universal Men in 1979 and continued through the Savuka years, with his full body of work all falling under one label.
“King Of Time” includes song’s performed on The Final Journey Tour such as “Color of My Skin.”
“It has definitely been a highlight for me to able to sign the legendary artist and global icon – Johnny Clegg. There are few artists from this African soul, whose music spans over 4 decades and who has released as many albums as he has.
“It is a wonderful opportunity to have new music recorded by a legend and a historical body of work at a unique point in time, under the Universal Music Group umbrella,” says Sipho Dlamini.

Hi All, Saw Johnny last night at the Berklee
PerformanceCenter here in Boston. I was, for me,the best show I have ever
seen by him. If you have been on the fence about whether togo see him, let
me tell you that you MUST go see this final tour.
Here is the setlist ....
Africa, Kilimanjaro, Woza Friday, Colour of My Skin, I Call Your Name, Take
My Heart Away, The Crossing, Walking Song (J Solo), Spirit is the Journey,
African Blue Sky, Cruel Crazy, I’ve Been Looking (duo), Great Heart,
Scatterlings - Encore - Asimbonanga, Dela, December African Rain
Jesse opened with a short (maybe 5 song) set. He played acoustic-guitar and
was accompanied by a multi-instrumentalist on synths. The gentlemannext to
me and I agreed that this set of songs was much better than the last time he
opened for Johnny a couple years back. Very enjoyable.
The crowd was a bit more sedate than in past shows at the Somerville Theater
People were seated for most of the show, but we all did stand for
appropriate moments (like when Johnny first took the stage to a standing
ovation.) I think there was one song where some people went into the aisle
to dance, but unlike past shows it was just that once. Dunno if it was the
venue keeping people out of the aisle or if we’ve all just gotten too old to
jump up.
Johnny never mentioned his diagnosis. It was just quietly understood by
everyone. He looked great. Perhaps a bit more pale, but never lacking
energy. His kicks were higher than I’ve seen since I saw Juluka in ~1985.
Obviously the issues he had with his back have gotten better. He was upbeat
and yet there was (for meany way) an ever-present somberness to the evening.
I was teary-eyed during several songs, which is not normal for me at a
concert. I suppose if I just walked in off the street I wouldn’t have felt
that way, it would have just been a fantastic upbeat show. By the way, it
was sold out weeks ago.
The mix of songs was new. This wasn’t his “greatest hits farewell tour”. It
was designed to be more of a look back at his entire career, with new
stories (always a highlight) and some different songs in the mix.
Mandissa was back, which I always appreciate on songs like Asimbonanga. She
looked happy and in good health. I thought I read that Sipho had appeared at
some of the earlier shows, but he was not here tonight.
People always ask about what t-shirts they were selling. They had a bunch of
different styles (I glanced on the way in) but I honestly couldn’t tell you
any more than that. Sorry.
After the show, I decided that I needed to see Johnny and say goodbye. Many
years ago, other Scatterlings from this list and myself waited by the stage
door in the alley behind Berklee to say hi to Johnny. At that time he signed
my “Universal Men” CD booklet and commented on how youthful he looked on the
cover. I’ve had my picture taken with him at Somerville, so tonight all I
wanted was to say hello. I had been waiting maybe 20minutes or so and the
musician who had accompanied Jesse during his set, came out to get more
t-shirts for the merch table. He used the “beeper” to unlock their van, went
in and shut the door. I could immediately tell that he had locked himself
in, so I stepped over and opened the back door. He was appreciative. Once he
had what he needed, he headed back inside. I said to him, “Since I just
saved your life, could you take me back in with you to meet Johnny?” He
said, sorry but he couldn’t. Oh well, it was worth a try. Finally, after 45
minutes or so Jesse came out with his guitar on his back followed by a
couple of other folks and Johnny. I stepped up and shook Johnny’s hand and
gave him a hug. I said, “I met you here at this same spot about 20 years
ago. I just wanted to say thank you for coming to the States with this tour.
You didn’t have to come here. You could have just stayed home. For all the
American Scatterlings I just want to thank you for coming.” He smiled. To
wrap up I said, “I guess now I’m just hoping for a miracle.” To which he
replied, “We all are mate” and we each went our separate ways.

Hi Gary and fellow Scatterlings,
I was at the show last night and several times fought back tears. I was
trying to not be so emotional about his last show, but all I could think
about were the lyrics from December African Rain. Great show. I really
enjoyed Jesse and could see his growth as an artist. The songs that he and
Johnny performed together were very touching. Johnny was strong, determined
and shared his stories with lots of humor. Good for you Gary. I got a
picture and autograph with him at that same stage door years ago. Last night
was a gift. God bless you Johnny.

DStv presents Johnny Clegg - The Final Journey
Johnny Clegg·Montag, 6. November 2017
A once-off performance, Johnny Clegg and Friends The Final Concert will take place at the Ticketpro Dome on Saturday, November 11, where Clegg will be joined on stage by several friends who include Sipho Mchunu, Soweto Gospel Choir, Prime Circle, Arno Carstens, Parlotones and Just Jinjer. The Final Concert is brought to you by DStv, Real Concerts and 947
The Johannesburg concerts sold out within hours of opening, leaving many people disappointed. Says Clegg: “I am delighted to be joined on stage by some of this country’s best talent who also happen to be my friends. It is the perfect ending to my tour and the final opportunity to thank my Johannesburg audiences for their incredible support.”
Johnny will then head to Cape Town where he performs his final sold-out concert at The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden on 25th November.
Eastern Cape fans get to see Johnny for the final time in January 2018. DStv and Algoa FM are proud to announce that due to public demand an extra date has been added for Port Elizabeth on Sunday 28th January 2018.
Earlier this year Johnny announced a final set of concerts in South Africa and overseas to thank his fans for their support over the 40-year long journey that spans his career.
“Our association with Johnny Clegg provides the opportunity for DStv to showcase the power of great television this Festive Season by bringing to life our customers’ favourite musical content in a multisensory experience. The tour helps us build meaningful relationships with our stakeholders – from customers and staff to suppliers and various partners – who continuously help us to build our business.”
Adds Johnny Clegg manager and promoter Roddy Quin from Real Concerts about the Final Concert in Johannesburg: “We have had so many requests from artists to pay a tribute to Johnny that we have tried to include as many as we can as part of this show and made the decision to add one last Johannesburg concert to the tour in a much bigger venue to accommodate those who missed the first series of concerts, and who wanted to be part of what will be an historical moment in South African music history. We have also dropped ticket prices to make it accessible for everyone.”
The concert is built around Clegg’s unparalleled repertoire of songs which began with the release of Juluka’s Universal Men in 1979 and continued through the Savuka years and his more recent solo work.
Clegg’s many different hits and live favourites will be brought to life by the biggest production ever created for a Clegg live show, supported by his world-class live band.
Another highlight of the shows will be the different styles of dance that have been integral to Clegg’s life and work, ever since he learnt the fundamentals of Zulu music and traditional Zulu Inhlangwinini dancing with Charlie Mzila while still a teenager.
After the Final Journey World Tour Clegg will take time off to finish his autobiography and spend time with his family and do the things he hasn't been able to do due to an incredible work schedule over the past three decades.
